ASMSU will not fund a concert promoting voter turnout, after Student Assembly Chairperson Mike Webber was forced to make the tie-breaking vote at a meeting Thursday.
The bill initially failed in a prior meeting and was recalled after it passed unanimously in Finance Committee, where the proposed amount of funding was increased.
The proposal would have provided money and support to show the political documentary “The Youngest Candidate” at the Auditorium, along with a concert and presentations featuring the film’s soundtrack and cast members on Nov. 2. ASMSU is MSU’s undergraduate student government.
It took only four words from Webber to turn down what international studies junior Nic Clark called his “sole purpose in life for the past six weeks.”
“My decision is ‘No,’” Webber said.
Webber said the poor turnout of ASMSU members at a Sept. 24 preview screening added to problems with passing the bill.
“It would be good if more people went,” he said. “People have busy lives and busy schedules. I can’t mandate that they go.”
Initially, Clark, who has been the event’s voice to ASMSU since Sept. 18., asked for $10,000 for the event. After failing at that amount, the bill was upped to $12,000 at a later Finance Committee meeting, where it was approved unanimously. At last week’s meeting, the bill was sliced to $8,000 before failing.
The assembly originally was concerned with the possibly partisan nature of the film, as well as a lack of budget.
Communication arts and sciences representative Matt York was the only ASMSU member to attend the preview screening of the film. At Thursday’s meeting, he voted to fund the concert.
“I am very disappointed with the decision of the assembly,” York said.
Clark was visibly deterred by the vote, but didn’t feel completely discouraged.
“Everyone says ‘no’ a million times before they say ‘yes,’” he said. “I’ve really been a one-person soldier. They missed a huge opportunity.”
Webber said it was difficult to make the tie-breaking vote.
“I hope I never have to do it again,” he said. “I feel really bad, though, honestly.”
