Items stolen from car parked near Jenison

An Olympus digital camera, purse, eyeglasses and money were stolen Saturday from a vehicle parked in Lot 67, near Jenison Field House, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

A 53-year-old Muskegon man and 55-year-old Muskegon woman with no MSU affiliation parked their 2003 Buick LeSabre at 3:30 p.m. and went for a walk on campus. When they returned at 4:30 p.m., they realized the car’s rear passenger window was broken, and the items from the vehicle were missing, McGlothian-Taylor said.

The value of the damage is estimated at $150, and the value of the stolen items is estimated at $1,525.

There are no suspects.

if you leave your purse in a car, it doesn’t mean it won’t get stolen, on the opposite you are attracting unwanted attention.

At least the doors were locked. People have to remember to hide stuff that’s in their car, don’t leave it visible. All it takes is a broken window and 10 seconds and it’s gone. Hide your stuff, put it in the trunk if you have to.

Are you both really trying to justify the breaking of a car window and theft of these items. I’m pretty sure that these 50+ adults are well aware of how NOT to get things stolen. The fact is, they figured they were on a respectable, safe college campus, where people look out for eachother. Going for a walk around campus and coming back to find your car window smashed and stuff gone is just horrible. lol and Jason B you guys are arrogant douchebags, quit trying to give advice and justify why things are stolen.

A question that I’ve always wondered about is why doesn’t DPS funnel some of their ticket money into parking lot survellence camaras? Vehicle breakins have been big for 30 years. If they don’t have the manpower to patrol these areas, put up camaras.

I guarentee it was one of EL’s shady neighbors from Lansing who committed the crime. Thugs!

I have to agree with Justification. What’s with the first two posters? These folks locked their vehicle and assumed it would be safe for an hour. That is a lot different than some dumb undergrad leaving their vehicle unlocked and unattended for several hours with the windows rolled down. Now in either case, theft is unacceptable, but at least in the former precautions were taken to prevent it. In later case, you’re just leaving yourself open to theft.

Additionally, Sparty here has a great point! Why aren’t there surveillance cameras in the lots? It would be a cheap, affordable way to prevent this shit from happening in the first place.

if any of you knew what real surveillance is you would know that it’s not so cheap. You have to buy cameras, install computers and softwares, teach people how to use them, and buy extreme amount of cables. And when camera has a very long cable, signal drops dramatically and it would be pointless to have a camera at that length. I have installed cameras on long distances and they work like sh((.

and Justification, they are +50, that means should understand that leaving a purse or a valuable thing in a locked car doesn’t mean it won’t get stolen. All you need is a little rock to break the window. IF you are going to leave things in a car, at least put it in a glove box, this is why it was created in the first place. This is MSU campus, not Harvard.

Maybe the MSU cops who sit at the Kellogg center and ticket people on Harrison and Michigan can do saftey patrols of campus. MSU cops are a joke. Everyone knows where to find there speed traps, and more importantly everyone knows that they don’t proactively protect the community, but rather sit in their cars and hand out tickets all day, or make the occasional run into a dorm (which usually requires three cars to respond) to ticket a minor. Please get off your butts and start walking around campus to keep everyone safe!

Also, in responce to “lol”, I just want to throw it out there if the MSU police department didn’t buy NEW SUV’s every year they could probably afford cameras. Not only do the SUV’s cost more then a crown victoria police cruiser, but they use a rediculious amount of gas. All this money could be much better well spent!

Ok, I’ll assume lol’s comment about cable distance is accurate though I’m no expert on current technology in this area. MSU is a small city within itself, with what I would consider a high petty crime rate. Why not break campus up into subsections, each with its own substation, which would be ultimately responsible for their piece of the pie. They then should be graded/evaluated on crime in their areas. Cameras would go to the local substation rather than across campus. Final question, why aren’t more students employed to monitor places like the commuter lots, especially at night and weekends?
