Music education freshman Jeffery Branch knows how to dress. His laid-back style blends chic designers with more practical clothing at reasonable prices. The State News caught up with Branch to talk about Texas, Prada and prison fashion.
The State News: How would you describe your style?
Jeffery Branch: I would describe my style as unique, a mix between what is affordable and what is ‘in’ in fashion right now. I’m not really dedicated to one type of fashion or designer or whatever.
SN: What stands out the most when people see you?
JB: My turtle inner-green accented Prada glasses. I get a lot of compliments on them. So no matter what outfit I’m wearing, I’m still wearing them.
SN: And how much were those?
JB: These? They were $560 for the frames.
SN: Do you have a favorite piece of clothing?
JB: Yes, it is my cashmere Ralph Lauren bright orange sweater that I love.
SN: You came to MSU from Texas. Do you intend to change your style to adapt to the colder weather here?
JB: Actually, back home in Texas I wore argyle sweaters and scarves and lots of things that even though the climate in Texas wasn’t good for, I still wanted to wear them because I thought they were cool.
So it’s really good, now that I’ve come here my clothes can actually have a function as opposed to being just stylish.
SN: Does your taste in music and other entertainment influence your style?
JB: I don’t think so. I’m very big into choral and classical music and I don’t think it really relates into my clothing style very well, so I’d say no.
SN: Where do you get most of your clothing?
JB: I do like name-brand clothes but I will refuse to pay a great amount of money for them so I’ll usually go to outlet malls that have designer names.
SN: If you could walk the red carpet for one night, what would you wear?
JB: I would wear a Prada suit. Like a suede Prada suit that was handmade for me, imported from Italy. Yeah, that’d be sweet, with some Gucci shoes. I’d go all out for the red carpet.
SN: If you were in prison, would you wear the classic black and white stripes or opt for the orange jumpsuit?
JB: I would definitely go with the orange jumpsuit because I think it makes way more of a fashion statement than the classic black-and-white striped suit. And I mean, who doesn’t want to make a good fashion splash, even if you’re in prison?

SN: Horizontal or vertical stripes?
JB: Vertical. I just think they’re way more appropriate — anyone can look good in vertical stripes. Horizontal, not so much.
