Interior design senior Kim Wargo models her flamingo Halloween costume, which was made by her mother. “She used to make all my Halloween costumes when I was little, so when I mentioned I wanted to make this she just offered,” Wargo said.

This week’s SN Style is a little different. In the Halloween spirit, The State News caught up with interior design senior Kim Wargo, who made her own tropical costume.

Wargo tells us the work that went into this creation and what the transformation into this unique bird is like.

The State News: Why a flamingo?

Kim Wargo: I was trying to think of something really original and something I’ve never seen before and so I was kind of thinking of a type of animal.

I went on the Internet to get ideas and I saw some really ugly flamingos and I was trying to think of something I could do that’s cute.

SN: Was this your first choice?

KM: No, originally I was going to be a frog and then I could not figure out how to design it, so I moved on past that.

SN: Can you describe your costume?

KM: My costume is basically a ball of feathers and a big beak that basically obstructs my view of everything.

SN: How did you make it?

KM: All I did was I took a hot pink hoodie and I took pink boas and wrapped around, sewing them individually on. Then the beak is just foam that we sewed together and then added detail like the eyes and the black tip of the beak.

SN: Who helped you?

KM: My mom did basically everything. She’s always made my costume, ever since I was little, so when I told her I wanted to make something she volunteered to take the responsibility. It was really nice of her.

SN: How many hours did it take to make?

KM: I’d probably say a whole day with maybe a few breaks. Probably about eight hours.

SN: Where will you be wearing this costume?

KM: I’m an interior design major and we’re having a party at Dublin Square, so I’ll be wearing it there all night.

SN: Do you think your friends will be shocked?

KM: Yes, because I told them what I’m being, but I don’t think they understand how big and massive I’m going to look. When I show up, I think they’re just going to die laughing.

SN: Is that what you hope?

KM: Oh yeah, I was going all out this year because it’s my senior year and I always try to think of something different. Like last year I was the Energizer Bunny and I haven’t seen many people be that either, so I’m really excited to see their reaction.

SN: Do you know any interesting facts about flamingos?

KM: Flamingos are pink because of the red pigment in the shrimp they eat.
