Voter registration has spiked by about 310,000 over the 2004 presidential election, according to statistics released Wednesday by the Michigan Secretary of State.

About 7.47 million Michigan residents have registered to vote in this year’s presidential election, Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land announced.

The number represents about 98 percent of the population over 18.

The trend of increased registration in this election also was seen locally. In Ingham County, 218,300 people are registered to vote. This is an increase of about 16,000 since 2004.

In East Lansing, nearly 37,000 people have registered, up from about 29,000 in 2004. About 13,500 of East Lansing’s registered voters are students, City Clerk Nicole Evans said.
