Police Brief 10/30/08
By Abby Lubbers (Last updated: 10/29/08 11:34pm)Student snatches tofu in late-night snack raid
A tofu heist Oct. 20 on the Snyder-Phillips Hall loading dock left hungry students with no soybean curds, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.
A 21-year-old student stole three pounds of tofu and a metal baking pan between 8:06 and 8:23 p.m.
The value of the tofu is estimated at $45, and the value of the baking pan is estimated at $50, McGlothian-Taylor said.
Embezzlement charges are being sought through the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office, McGlothian-Taylor said.
The incident is still under investigation.

10/30/08 1:50amA $50 baking pan? Was it made of platinum?
Hah
10/30/08 7:17amI’m sure everybody was upset they didn’t get their tofu curds. (Why the hell would somebody eat plain tofu on purpose) Cheese curds on the other hand…yum…I think I’ll go to the dairy store today.

10/30/08 9:42amReally? This is news?
I think the State News is beginning to turn into “The Onion”!

10/30/08 9:56am$50 for a baking pan? That makes me want to march over to the Admin building and demand my money back. That is ridiculous.

10/30/08 10:03am$45 for 3lbs of tofu?? I can get the same amount for $3!
lol
10/30/08 10:04amit’s funny how the tofu is cheaper than the baking pan, just tells you how crappy the food is on campus.
Marie
10/30/08 10:20amAs sad as it is $50 is normal for a large pan but seriously $45 dollars for 3lbs of curdled soymilk????

10/30/08 10:24amThis got reported to the Prosecutor’s Office for embezzlement? Seriously? Gees. The only punishment need is to make the offending student eat all the tofu in one sitting.

10/30/08 10:27amThe baking pans are huge. Go to Meijer and see what big ones cost – they’re about 20 bucks for a 13×9 pan, and the caf ones are easily twice the size.
mcb
10/30/08 11:19amI will accept that buying a single pan that size may cost $50, but we are not talking about your kitchen at home. The university can negotiate discounts for buying in bulk from the supplier. I doubt that Sny/Phy is the only caff that uses these pan’s. So unless the university is buying them one at a time as needed (which doesn’t make much sense cost wise anyway), they should not be paying that much for pans.
The same rule applies to food. I seriously doubt that 45 is the lowest bulk cost that could be negotiated for the tofu. So unless the university is claiming the actual value instead of the price paid, they are spending our money stupidly.
No vegans?
10/30/08 11:29amWhere are all the vegans that claim their food is a cheaper alternative then meat?
Ron Jeremy
10/30/08 11:33am15 dollars a pound?
I don’t even charge that much for my meat.
Ginny
10/30/08 12:29pmIt is very common for pans of that size to be $50 or more.
The price of the tofu includes the cost of having it shipped to MSU. It recent years that cost has gone up considerably given rising gas prices. This is also why we have seen a rise in the cost of produce. Companies, like the one I work for has to pay more to have it shipped now, so the price rises. $45 isn’t that outlandish.

10/30/08 1:39pmWe all know that Barack Obama and his radical left wing whack job cronies were up to this. Tofu and baking pans are key components to the hippie, socialist movement……conspiracy

10/30/08 2:34pmmuahahahaha!!!!
LOL GINNY
10/30/08 4:42pmThe “raise” in gas prices!? where the **** have you been gas has dropped $2 since i have been in college and that’s is only a few months as i am a freshman. no the less Tofu is no $15 per pound with shipping.
Thanks for playing but the price is wrong *****
Ginny
10/30/08 5:44pmAs a freshman I can understand that you have not been driving for the number of years that I have been. It’s pretty undeniable that gas is not the $1.77 it was when I first started driving. As to where I’ve been….I’ve been in the real world, working. Where we have seen shipping costs go up with the price of gas. I don’t think you really understood my post.
Stelli
10/30/08 6:46pmA pound of tofu is roughly $2, so $6 =/ $45. I don’t even see how shipping could account for the other $39. That’s just ridiculous, the University wastes so much of our money on things like this. I’ve worked for MSU Housing and Food Services for almost 3 years now and trust me, I’ve seen just how much food gets wasted on a daily basis.
HOWEVER, I do have to mention that students are also a major reason why each cafeteria meal ticket is about $7.

Stelli is crazy!
10/30/08 7:06pmWhy on earth would you critique students for having multiple drinks with their meal, or for putting a large amount of food on their tray??? Anyone who has ever eaten here at MSU in the cafe knows that things that may look good often taste nasty, or they are unsure and “bet on every horse” and that is perfectly acceptable considering the cost of a meal plan.

10/30/08 7:59pmI hate reading the police briefs for one reason, the name “Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor.” Pick one last name please because your name sounds obnoxious.

10/30/08 8:57pmI am not an MSU student but this article kicks the bucket for me! I’m glad as a tax paying citizen where my money is going towards the colleges to fight crime…especially tofu crime! ::rolls eyes:: if I only had the choice were my money was going MSU would certainly not be one of them!
RE: Ginny
10/30/08 11:31pmi have been driving since gas was over $2 and i have been working since i turned 15, so please i beg to differ i have been driving while gas was $4.35 and now that it is $2.15 here in EL i believe it has dropped $2 since i have been in college. And yes i have been in the real world working i was IT for a Law Firm. I know Shipping has gone up so have everything else, gas, groceries, and any other thing imaginable, but you can no blame gas prices for tofu being $15/lb with shipping. so please excuse me for “not understanding your post”

11/03/08 11:00amThis guy probably had help from Matt Damon, Brad Pitt and George Clooney on this one. Possibly others, hard to say…
i love tofu
11/08/08 6:09pmThe same tofu is 3$ per 24 oz. at Meijer. You can fit about 9 of those in the pan, minus room for water, and the fact the tofu was cubed. So really, it was about 15$ worth. And when it’s in bulk, the shipping is cheaper. Duh.
