The baking pans are huge. Go to Meijer and see what big ones cost – they’re about 20 bucks for a 13×9 pan, and the caf ones are easily twice the size.

I will accept that buying a single pan that size may cost $50, but we are not talking about your kitchen at home. The university can negotiate discounts for buying in bulk from the supplier. I doubt that Sny/Phy is the only caff that uses these pan’s. So unless the university is buying them one at a time as needed (which doesn’t make much sense cost wise anyway), they should not be paying that much for pans.
The same rule applies to food. I seriously doubt that 45 is the lowest bulk cost that could be negotiated for the tofu. So unless the university is claiming the actual value instead of the price paid, they are spending our money stupidly.

It is very common for pans of that size to be $50 or more.
The price of the tofu includes the cost of having it shipped to MSU. It recent years that cost has gone up considerably given rising gas prices. This is also why we have seen a rise in the cost of produce. Companies, like the one I work for has to pay more to have it shipped now, so the price rises. $45 isn’t that outlandish.

As a freshman I can understand that you have not been driving for the number of years that I have been. It’s pretty undeniable that gas is not the $1.77 it was when I first started driving. As to where I’ve been….I’ve been in the real world, working. Where we have seen shipping costs go up with the price of gas. I don’t think you really understood my post.

A pound of tofu is roughly $2, so $6 =/ $45. I don’t even see how shipping could account for the other $39. That’s just ridiculous, the University wastes so much of our money on things like this. I’ve worked for MSU Housing and Food Services for almost 3 years now and trust me, I’ve seen just how much food gets wasted on a daily basis.

HOWEVER, I do have to mention that students are also a major reason why each cafeteria meal ticket is about $7. Students throw so much food away it’s obscene and disturbing. And no, I’m not being dramatic. There are many people who throw away as much food as they actually eat. So next time you feel like complaining about how much a meal plan is here at State, do keep in mind that a lot of it’s due to your fellow students being incredibly wasteful. And say something to that kid sitting next to you in the cafeteria with three entrees and four drinks.

Why on earth would you critique students for having multiple drinks with their meal, or for putting a large amount of food on their tray??? Anyone who has ever eaten here at MSU in the cafe knows that things that may look good often taste nasty, or they are unsure and “bet on every horse” and that is perfectly acceptable considering the cost of a meal plan.

i have been driving since gas was over $2 and i have been working since i turned 15, so please i beg to differ i have been driving while gas was $4.35 and now that it is $2.15 here in EL i believe it has dropped $2 since i have been in college. And yes i have been in the real world working i was IT for a Law Firm. I know Shipping has gone up so have everything else, gas, groceries, and any other thing imaginable, but you can no blame gas prices for tofu being $15/lb with shipping. so please excuse me for “not understanding your post”

The same tofu is 3$ per 24 oz. at Meijer. You can fit about 9 of those in the pan, minus room for water, and the fact the tofu was cubed. So really, it was about 15$ worth. And when it’s in bulk, the shipping is cheaper. Duh.
