Icers lose, tie in College Hockey Showcase

For the first time this season, the MSU hockey team scored four goals in a game.
But the end to the Spartans’ scoring drought only resulted in a 4-4 tie Saturday with No. 1 Minnesota in the second game of the College Hockey Showcase at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis.
Freshman forward Daultan Leveille scored two goals for the Spartans while senior forward Daniel Sturges and sophomore forward Andrew Rowe each added a goal.
The Spartans (4-9-3 overall) had a two-goal lead twice in the game but were unable to close it out for the victory over the top-ranked team in the nation.
The tie snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Spartans during which the team only scored six goals during the losing spell.
Freshman goaltender Drew Palmisano earned the start in Saturday’s tie and made 22 saves.
In Friday’s first game of the College Hockey Showcase, the Spartans fell to Wisconsin 3-1 at Kohl Center.
Senior forward Tim Crowder scored the lone goal for the Spartans on the power play with assists from senior forward Matt Schepke and sophomore defenseman Jeff Petry.
Senior goaltender Jeff Lerg made a season-high 50 saves in the losing effort, while the Spartans offense was only able to record 12 shots.
The Spartans were on the penalty kill a season-high nine times but didn’t surrender a power play goal to the Badgers.
This weekend MSU will play a home-and-home against No. 15 Michigan with the first game at 7:35 Friday at Yost Ice Arena.
