Meeting sends concert, supplies students' way

November 9, 2008

From blue books to concerts, ASMSU wants students to be sitting happy in 2009. At Thursday’s Student Assembly meeting, the group’s main concern was students.

ASMSU is MSU’s undergraduate student government.

Spring concert

Katy Perry, T-Pain, The Roots, Third Eye Blind and Ben Folds are options for a February concert that was approved with 17-3-1.

Kyle Dysarz, student assembly vice chairperson for external affairs; and Morgan Green, Student Assembly director of event planning, gave examples of musicians who were within the $60,000 artist budget to perform.

The concert most likely will be held at the Auditorium and will not be free, although the tickets will be “cheap.”

Riding high from the success of iVote, a September concert that featured Nas and Brand New and aimed to raise student awareness during election season, ASMSU members are hopeful another concert will introduce students to ASMSU. Seven new representatives were recruited from iVote, and more than 8,000 people attended the concert.

“We want to keep the momentum,” Green said. “We want to increase ASMSU exposure as much as possible.”

Blue books

ASMSU will continue to be the main source for free blue books on campus. The organization voted to order $2,500 worth of blue books, as its supply has dwindled down to nine boxes from the 25 earlier this semester. The bill was approved by consent, which was greatly attributed to the fact that the books can be used next year as well.

New server

ASMSU will upgrade from a server that “broke down twice a week” to a shiny, new piece of technology. Up to $15,000 will be used from the risk management fund to replace the server, via a bill that passed unanimously. The current server was described as “near death” by assembly members.

“If you look at (the current server) wrong, it will break down,” said Garrett Faulk, Student Assembly vice chairperson for internal affairs.
