With America’s new financial reality, how do you pay for college? It’s a question that is probably only just beginning to haunt students, whether they’re a high school senior applying for their future or a current student wondering where the money for the next semester is going to come from.

I have no sympathy for the private student loan industry. They are presently the only non-government lender I am aware of with near-absolute protection from discharge in bankruptcy as well as the ability to charge variable interest where the sky is the limit. The bankruptcy reform act was one of the worst pieces of legislation to come out of the Bush administration BECAUSE it gave private lenders the same protection given to tax payer subsidized lenders. Student lenders have collection tactics that would make the mafia envious – I wish I could employ some of the tactics they use. They have gotten plenty of bailout from the government.
