Student in Abbot Hall robbed by 2 men Saturday
Tweet
A 19-year-old student was robbed and threatened Saturday in his Abbot Hall dorm room, according to MSU police.
The student fell asleep in his first-floor room after the football game, and woke up at 6 p.m. to find a 6-foot-tall man with a medium build in the room, holding his roommate’s laptop, police said.
The door to the room was closed but unlocked, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.
When the student told the man he was “not going to be stealing anything from him,” another man, who appeared to have a gun under his sweatshirt, entered the room. The second man closed the door behind him, said the victim, who declined to identify himself for safety concerns.
“He said he did (have a gun). I didn’t see it, but I wasn’t going to take that chance,” the victim said.
The incident was the first armed robbery on campus this semester, according to campus crime statistics.
The suspects reportedly sat down and smoked a few cigarettes in the room before saying they had more people to talk to, the victim said.
“It’s kind of frightening because I’ve always heard of things that were on campus on the streets, not necessarily in a dorm room,” said dietetics junior Amy Carion, who lives in Abbot Hall.
The first suspect was wearing dark jeans, a black sweatshirt with white writing and a black hat. The second man had a medium build, was 6 feet 4 inches tall and wore a white hooded sweatshirt, police said.
The suspects reportedly stole $20 in cash. The roommate’s laptop was damaged.
Residents in the dorm said they were not notified about the robbery.
“It’s a little weird that we didn’t hear anything about it. I’d really like to hear more about it — what happened?” said Michael Fetter, a mechanical engineering sophomore who lives down the hall from the victim.
The case is still under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to call MSU police at (517) 355-2222.

So I should be on the lookout for all tall men with white hoodies? Let’s drop the politically correct act for one second here. Were these guys white? Black? Hispanic? If you’re not giving a complete and accurate description, then why do it at all?

Ok, THERE NEEDS TO BE ELECTRONIC ID SWIPERS ON ALL THE DORMS….holden is experimenting with it right now, but at many major universities, dorm security is actually taken seriously. PUT ID SWIPES ON ALL THE DORMS 24/7.

i agree with mike. msu is way behind on having id swipers on the doors.
i do also hate how the state news will not publish the race of perpetrators

Andrew and PC Police, I absolutely agree. If they’re pulling guns on people and robbing at gunpoint they most definitely DO NOT need to be protected by some PC bullshit. Why the State News refuses to publish any further descriptions is beyond me. You’re not going to offend anyone by telling us that they’re Caucasian, African American, Hispanic, Asian or what have you. It’s not racial profiling or anything of the sort. Its information that could help capture these guys and protect others. If the State News can’t get its collective head out of its ass and see that is a real disservice to its readers and this university.

So, in the future we can expect the following paragraph: “The first suspect was wearing dark jeans, a black sweatshirt with white writing and a black hat. The second man had a medium build, was 6 feet 4 inches tall and wore a white hooded sweatshirt, police said.”
“The first suspect was wearing pants, a sweatshirt with writing and a hat. The second person was neither fat nor thin, was tallish and wore a sweatshirt, police said.”

This isn’t the first article by Abby Lubbers that has shown irresponsible journalism. The State News should really think twice about her employment as a writer.

So the State News is not allowed to define suspects in racial terms, but it can by sex…?
I don’t see how you can defend saying, “A female person did not commit this crime, a male person did,” but you can’t say “A black person did not commit this crime, a white person did.”
Apparently, stereotyping by sex is cool, race is a no-no. Right……

that’s why you should always have a baseball bat in your dorm room or car. After all those reports about robberies, it’s time students took the matter in their own hands. I have a metal baseball bat in my car and if somebody tries some sh%t, I don’t need police to come to the rescue, I can do everything myself. Just get yourself a mini metal bat from sports store and keep it somewhere near your bed, there has been too many campus robbies in the past. One hit on the head, and you don’t need to file any kind of report, the guy will be in a hospital in 20 minutes and your stuff will be safe, and you won’t be charged with anything because you were protecting yourself.

Okay, Mr. Technicality are you going to tell me that this isn’t a serious allegation regardless of whether or not it was truly a gun?
“We need id entry to all dorms….There is one place Michigan has us beat.”
A lot of university have MSU beat on this one. Are ID scanners fool proof? No, students still leave doors open to let in friends from the outside world into buildings and such, but installing the things would be a step in the right direction in cutting down on petty theft in the dorms.

Having students swipe ids to get into a building won’t change the security. Most students prop doors open or will open it for people. Why waste millions for a system that students won’t use properly?

Since the State News won’t release the details, here they are:
The first guy (who was in the room first) was a black male.
The man who then entered (allegedly with a handgun) was described as Hispanic.
I can understand trying to mitigate racial stereotypes, but when armed robbery is involved it’s important to have (even a general) idea of who the thugs are when crime is generally low on campus.

why werent you yelling at the top of your lungs for help, or at the very least try to find some sort of object to hit, stab, these bastards… do something- go for their eyes or nuts..anything but sit there and be a victim. u didnt get robbed just of $20, but its almost like they took ur pride & self confidence. gosh i feel bad for you. would have been a much better story if u fought back…u know..one you could tell to the grandkids…

Why can’t the residential parts of a dorm be ID-access only?
I understand that some parts of most dorms have classrooms so they can’t be completely resident-only buildings, but at a minimum why can’t the actual hallways of dorm rooms by accessed only by a resident ID? It’d be easy to let a friend in if they want to visit, but it would make it more difficult for crimes like this to take place.

President Simon and Angela Brown (University Housing), listen up!
Cut the bureaucratic red tape and make our living spaces more secure! Install ID access only to the residential areas of dorms.
How about getting the ID scanners before this recession is over… because crime like this will likely increase as times get worse in the Lansing area.
Thugs will hop on the #1 bus and ride to campus and prey on those with the high disposable income and fancy toys: the MSU student body.

We should avoid placing blame on the victim, while at the same time knowing our rights regarding self-defense law in Michigan. Here’s the law:
MCL 780.972.
The use of deadly force requires the following:
The person asserting self defense is not committing a crime.
-Is in a place where they have a legal right to be
-Has a reasonable and honest belief that deadly force is necessary to prevent Imminent death, sexual assault, or great bodily injury.
-No duty to retreat
The use of non-deadly force requires the following:
-Not committing a crime
-Legal right to be in the place
-Use of force other than deadly force is necessary to prevent imminent use of force by another
-No duty to retreat
____
So, if the suspect told the victim he had a gun self-defense is seemingly justified.

ID scanners are a joke! JUST LOCK YOU BEDROOM! also, these thieves and low lifes prey on the students in the dorms for a few reasons. Main reason is they know the kids do not have firearms in there dorm rooms. You need to protect yourself, good guys need guns if the bad guys have them.

Forget the lack of ID scanners on the doors… we don’t even have enough security cameras around campus to help us identify these guys. I might be mistaken, but I know at least in West Circle there’s only one security camera situated at the front door to each residence hall. We should at least get more cameras installed around campus before we start talking about ID scanners.
