Candlelight vigil to be held for missing student

December 6, 2008

A candlelight vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Rock on Farm Lane for missing MSU student Krista Lueth. The vigil is sponsored by Lueth’s fellow members of the MSU Department of Horticulture.

Horticulture junior Kathy Koch said the vigil is meant to keep Lueth’s disappearance fresh in the minds of the MSU community. The event is open to the public. Participants are encouraged to bring a candle, as organizers do not know how many they will be able to supply.

“We just want to support her family and friends,” Koch said. “We want them to know that people in the community do care about Krista, whether they knew her personally or not.

Lueth, 34, was last seen Nov. 11 by her neighbor Rick Stilgenbauer in his apartment on the 1100 block of Eureka Street in Lansing. Stilgenbauer lives in the unit below Lueth’s, which he had been renting from her for five months.

Koch said she was in one of Lueth’s classes and has been very emotional in the weeks since her disappearance, despite not knowing Lueth personally. She said Lueth’s absence has also weighed heavily on their professor, Dr. Art Cameron, who had met with Lueth on Nov. 11 and was supposed to meet with her again the following day.

“I know we’ve both been very emotional and we just thought that it was time do something,” Koch said.
