Students brave cold to protest construction contract

December 4, 2008

Students protesting the MSU project labor agreement contract were asking for equality when they rallied Thursday afternoon outside the Administration Building.

The MSU Board of Trustees wants to hire union contractors for the construction on the Brody Complex, a plan the board is likely to authorize to proceed today at its December meeting.

Louie Glinzak, a political theory and constitutional democracy junior, said this proposal concerns him.

“Having more people bidding on the contract will actually lower the cost of how much it’s going to cost the university to build and develop,” Glinzak said. “Having a limited number is going to increase tuition since they’re not going to be outbidding each other as much. Since parts of the contract are paid for with the students’ tuition dollars, we’re going to see an increase in tuition that we would see without PLA.”

While few students were out in the cold protesting, the group caused psychology junior Mandy Klein to think about the issue.

“I agree with what they’re saying,” she said. “I lived in the Brody Complex my freshman year, so I understand that there are renovations that need to be made. I think that if someone was to bid on it, they should accept a bid on it (that) was local, whether it was union or not. We need people that are part of the local economy and being supported by our university as much as possible.”

The students said they will speak at the board meeting, where they will address the board with their concerns.

“We’ve put a lot of research into it to provide us with facts that are hard to argue against,” Glinzak said. “We think that will aid our support at trying to gain them over to our side.”

Chemical engineering sophomore Tim Henkel, who participated in the rally, said he hopes the board takes them seriously when they present their side.

“They better take us seriously because we’re paying them,” Henkel said. “It sort of sets a tone that they’re essentially ignoring the consumers.”
