Disabled vets to get free education

Paying for school no longer will be a concern for disabled Michigan veterans if they take advantage of a new MSU tuition assistance program.

MSU’s Disabled Veterans Assistance Program, which was unveiled Thursday and will begin next fall, will cover all education-related costs for disabled veterans, including tuition, fees, books and room and board.

To qualify for the program, veterans must be Michigan residents, able to document their disability status and must work 10-12 hours per week, if possible.

Initially, the university is expecting the program to cost about $150,000.

The average cost of attending MSU for an in-state, undergraduate student is about $23,000 annually.

There currently are 207 MSU students who receive some form of veteran’s assistance. Nineteen of them are considered to be disabled.

A university official could not be reached Thursday afternoon for comment on the program.

not to take anything away from veterans but I have a friend who broke his wrist playing a pick up basketball game while in the service. He is considered a disabled veteran because of this. So MSU is going to offer him free tuition??? I think they need to put some stipulations on this as to extent of disability etc.
