Morgan making continual impact early in conference season

January 6, 2009

Raymar Morgan pushes past a defender from Ohio State during the first half of Tuesday’s game. The Spartans beat the Buckeyes, 67-58, with Morgan scoring 13 points and pulling in 10 rebounds.

Junior forward Raymar Morgan netted another double-double Friday, becoming the first MSU player to accomplish the feat in three straight games since Paul Davis during the 2005-06 season.

Morgan scored 13 points and collected 10 rebounds for the No. 8 Spartans, who defeated Ohio State 67-58 Tuesday night at Breslin Center.

“I’m just on right now and feeling good,” Morgan said. “Hopefully that’s something that will continue.”

Morgan, the reigning Big Ten player of the week, had one double-double during the nonconference schedule (26 points, 10 rebounds against The Citadel), but has now realized the feat every game of the conference schedule.

No woes for Roe
After undergoing two procedures during the offseason to repair his battered knees, the last thing freshman forward Delvon Roe needed was another injury.

The bad news: Roe tweaked his left ankle on Dec. 27 against Oakland.

The good news: The injury doesn’t appear to be serious.

Roe, who came off the bench and played sparingly against Minnesota and Northwestern, got his first start since suffering the injury Tuesday, finishing with six points and eight rebounds in 17 minutes.

“It’s feeling good, it’s getting there,” said Roe, who grew up in Ohio, but was not a Buckeyes fan. “I’ve just got to keep rehabbing it, it will be fine.”

Roe said his ankle, which was protected by a brace, is about 85 percent better, but is still giving him some fits.

“Jumping off the left foot will be the hardest thing,” Roe said about getting healthy. “Cutting and everything else is fine.”

Lift off the bench
Although Roe is the more heralded freshman in the class, few MSU players have provided more clutch plays this season than guard Korie Lucious.

Lucious’ numbers rarely jump off the box score, but he consistently makes plays when they count, and has been a key reserve for the Spartans this season.

Lucious was clutch again against Ohio State, nailing a pair of 3-pointers during key moments in the game. His first triple snapped a five-minute field goal drought and tied the game at 17, while his second 3-pointer pushed MSU’s lead back into double dights when the Buckeyes were surging.

“I just want to play as solid as possible (when I enter the game),” said Lucious, who finished with six points and one assist in 10 minutes. “When I see an open shot, I take it.”

Lucious said he’s not happy with the amount of minutes he’s playing, but makes the most of every second he’s on the court.

“I’m not playing as much as I want,” he said. “But when I come in, I want to play with as much energy as possible.”

No Izzone, no problem
Despite the absence of the Izzone, which is still collectively enjoying its winter break, there was no shortage of noise at Breslin Center.

In fact, the sold-out arena was near deafening at times, particularly when MSU went on an 11-0 run in the first half and fought to preserve its lead in the second.

Granted, the adults and children who flocked the building didn’t make as much noise as the famed student section, but they helped ease MSU to its 26th consecutive win in East Lansing.
