Snow should let up in time for return trips to campus

January 9, 2009

Students shouldn’t worry about snow showers hampering their trips back to campus this weekend, but can expect a frigid first week of classes, said Jake Dunne, a meteorologist for WLNS Channel 6.

“Saturday afternoon and Sunday should both be quiet and dry for those returning,” Dunne said Friday.

“We’ll have some light snow this afternoon, maybe an inch or two by sunset. It will let up for a bit and pick up again in the night with three or four inches and be done no later than noon on Saturday.”

Monday will be cold with a chance of snow, and then temperatures “will take a plunge,” Dunne said. The first week of the semester could be the coldest the area has had since January 2006.

“It has been a big pocket of extremely cold air up in Canada and Alaska,” he said. “The air mass has had a lot of time to build and get cold and is getting heavier to come down to Michigan.”

Some mornings next week will be around or below zero, Dunne said.

Supply chain management senior Alex Carson said he expects students will be less likely to venture to their classes with the cold weather.

“Students are often hesitant to go to the first week of classes anyway because they’re only doing the syllabus work, and the cold weather will only make it worse,” he said.
