University withdraws spamming charges against ASMSU director

ASMSU Association Director Kara Spencer said the spamming charges against her have been withdrawn by the university, and the formal warning that was placed in her student file also has been removed.

In September, Spencer sent an e-mail to 391 faculty members encouraging increased communication regarding proposed changes to Welcome Week. On Dec. 10, she was found guilty by the Student-Faculty Judiciary of sending a spam e-mail and was given a formal warning. Spencer appealed on Jan. 12 to the University Student Appeals Board.

MSU’s bulk e-mail policy states that e-mails can only be sent to 20-30 recipients over a two-day span without prior permission.

Throughout the case, Spencer gained the support of civil liberties groups such as the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education who urged the university to drop the charges and change the e-mail policy.
