Dantonio gives '09 recruiting class 'A' grade
By Cash Kruth (Last updated: 02/05/09 12:06am)When MSU football head coach Mark Dantonio tells his players their hard work will pay off, he can point to MSU’s 2009 recruiting class as a prime example.
Dantonio
On Wednesday’s National Signing Day, the first day high school football seniors can sign a National Letter of Intent, the Spartans officially added 23 student-athletes to the football program for the 2009 season. Dantonio, who graded last year’s recruiting class “between a B and B-,” left no doubt what he thought about this year’s latest group of players.
“When you do your work, I guess you get the grade you were supposed to get. You get an A, and I’m grading this class as an A,” Dantonio said Wednesday in a press conference at Skandalaris Football Center.
“I say that because of the quality of player and the quality of academic students we have here, which will reflect in graduation rates down the line.”
MSU’s class — which includes seven players who earned All-America honors from various scouting services — is ranked as high as No. 15 in the nation by recruiting Web site Rivals.com. The Spartans signed 10 four-star recruits in the class and picked up seven of the top-10 ranked players in Michigan.
During a day in which dozens of high school athletes reneged their verbal commitments and jumped from one school to another, the Spartans managed to hang on to all 23 players who had verbally committed. Of those 23 verbals, Dantonio said 16 came before or by September 2008 — nearly five months prior to National Signing Day.
“None of our committed players visited another football team, and none of our committed players waffled at all,” Dantonio said while talking about linebacker Chris Norman (Detroit), one of MSU’s first verbal commitments.
“They all stayed strong, and that’s a commitment to not only this university but to their high schools, the people they represent back home, and it’s a statement on the relationship and the trust we built here.”
Three members of the 2009 class — defensive end Corey Freeman and wide receivers Donald Spencer and Patrick White — already have embraced their new home by enrolling in classes at MSU this spring, while other members of the class have been in regular contact with one another.
Future MSU offensive lineman David Barrent (West Des Moines, Iowa), who Rivals ranked as the No. 1 player in Iowa and the ninth-best offensive tackle in the nation, said he exchanged text messages with offensive lineman Nate Klatt (Clinton, Ohio) and quarterback Andrew Maxwell (Midland, Mich.) Wednesday after each signed his Letter of Intent.
Barrent, who originally verbally committed to Iowa before deciding on MSU, said he believes this class can live up to Dantonio’s “A” grade and help land even more talented recruiting classes in the future.
“Coach Dantonio’s done a great job recruiting,” Barrent said. “With my class, we obviously have talent, we just need to go in and put the work in, and we have unlimited potential.”
Barrent said of Dantonio: “He’s done a great job with our class, but it’s only the beginning and he’s going to strive to get even better recruiting classes.”

02/04/09 11:50amwho cares? spartans will never win anyway.
LOL
02/04/09 12:15pmYeah, the Spartans will never make a New Year’s Day bowl or beat UM EVER!!!
Wait…
Matt
02/04/09 2:44pmYou should note that UofM’s class was ranked that high prior to the decommitment of 2 4* defensive tackles. Their defection will likely put their final ranking below MSU’s.
Further, 2 of their kids who have signed will likely not qualify which would further hurt their rankings.
But to focus on the positive of MSU’s class…I have been following recruiting for about 12 years now and this is the best class by far I have ever seen MSU land. The future is bright for MSU football much to the concern of Walmart Wolverines like ‘lol’ with the first post (no offense big LOL).

02/04/09 4:56pmHopefully our OC and Coach D can make the plays a little more random. I love Javon, but I think it’s very good he is gone. Same thing for Hoyer, who is the top recruited in the NFL from MSU, last I checked.
The false pride and wounded ego of the Wolverines can buzz off. Hopefully they pick it back up in 2-3 years. Then we’re in good shape!
Welcome to Michigan State for all the new recruits. Here’s hoping they can rank their priorities like this:
1. Academic Success
2. Athletic Success
3. Social Success
We seem to have our kids in reverse order.
GO GREEN

02/04/09 5:30pmLittle brother should just fold the program. There’s no reason to attempt to compete with us anymore – the great, genius Richard Rodriguez will run you out of that dilapidated, disgusting, John Deere-riding middle-of-nowhere buck-toothed hillbilly-laden stadium of yours next season.
Maybe you guys should pool your resources elsewhere, like continuing the aiding of the downfall of the American agriculture industry.
Think of it like this: With all of this effort you’re putting into this “football program” of yours, you could be watching that Larry the Cable Guy marathon on Comedy Central! Git ‘Er Done!

02/04/09 6:49pmWell I just looked at the ’09 schedule, and if this group is as good as they are being projected to be, then I don’t know why it would not be realistice for us to be in the hunt for the Big 10 title all season.
lol
02/04/09 6:56pmOMG, MSU beat UM once in the last what..6 years? and all of a sudden everyone is acting serious business.. yeahhh

02/05/09 10:51amAs much as I am looking forward to seeing these new recruits on the field, I hope we have enough depth to redshirt at least the linemen. The extra year in the weight room (and at the training table) makes a huge difference in bowl games against Big XII and SEC opponents.

02/05/09 12:03pmUM fans are sore losers and that’s how it always has been and will be. These recruits are a great addition to the team and should be a great group to work with and continue enhancing the program. Put in the work, and they’ll be great.

02/16/09 2:43pmOnly UofM fans can have a 3-9 football season (with a loss to MSU), then a loss at home to MSU in basketball and then have a huge headline all over ESPN like the following: “Less than a month before the start of spring practice, Michigan quarterback Steven Threet announced he will transfer from the school,” and still come on the statenews.com to talk trash. Good job, you can’t beat OSU anymore, and now you are slipping against MSU. Good luck UofM.
