“A legal alternative to music downloading programs such as Limewire or BitTorrent “definitely helped,” Hall said.”

State News needs to choose their wording a little more carefully.
There is nothing illegal about p2p downloading (it’s the copyrighted music – not the way it’s downloaded), and it’s not a good idea to spread that misconception…especially with all the legit uses for p2p.

Also, BitTorrent definitely encompasses more than music.

Technically Matt, it is the sharing of the music that is illegal, not the downloading of the copyrighted music.

Techinically, Correction, the downloading of copyrighted material is illegal too. That is because the act of downloading creates a duplicate copy of the material, on which royalties have not been paid. “Illegal to share, but legal to download from sharers” is a myth. Uploading and downloading without permission is technically illegal.
