Sexual assault reported outside Wells Hall

A 22-year-old female student reported being sexually assaulted outside of Wells Hall Wednesday morning, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

The assault reportedly occured around 10:45 a.m. as the student exited Wells Hall. The student told police a man grabbed her inappropriately and made obscene comments as she left the building.

As the student turned away, the suspect pushed her against a brick wall and stepped toward her. The student kicked and pushed the man before escaping to her car, which was parked in a nearby parking lot, police said.

The suspect is described as a white male in his early 20s with a medium build, about 6 feet tall and 185 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair. The suspect has a goatee, spoke in a deep voice and was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and faded blue jeans, police said.

The student was not injured and did not seek medical attention, police said.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact MSU police as (517) 355-2222.

Another reason to allow people licensed to carry a concealed weapon to do so on campus!

It seems as though the girl here was able to get away “uninjured” so what is the need for her to carry a concealed weapon? You want this to result in a criminal investigation with the girl having to convince the prosecutor that she was defending herself? Problem is she would have used unreasonable force since the attacker was not using deadly force and for her to pull a gun would lead to her being criminally charged.

Before you start pushing your ridiculous views that we should all be running around with guns, read up on some of the consequences!

2A’s Censor,
She was lucky to get away. However, will she or the next person always be so lucky? Carrying a concealed weapon is like knowing CPR; in an emergency it can help until professionals arrive.

Not everyone should be allowed to carry on campus, only licensed individuals. In the required training she would learn that in Michigan deadly force may be used to prevent death, great bodily harm that could lead to death, or rape. Therefore if she could legally carry on campus and drawing her gun did not deter the attacker, she would be justified in shooting him. In that situation though, she would at least have the choice of possibly facing criminal charges or being raped. Which would you prefer?

Jordan,
Unfortunately the presence of people does not always mean safety. Sometimes the more people that are around the less likely it is that any of them will help. It’s called “the bystander effect”.
