Spartans ready for meet with No. 9 Florida

February 11, 2009

MSU women’s gymnastics sophomore Kelsey Morley competes on the floor exercise during the Flip for a Cure competition Jan. 17 at Jenison Field House.

Fresh off two consecutive weekends of multiteam competition, the MSU gymnastics team will take on No. 9 Florida on Saturday in East Lansing, hoping to earn some valuable experience against a seasoned SEC opponent before heading back out on the road this month.

The Spartans took third in the Chicago Style Invitational last weekend, going against then-No. 14 Illinois, Illinois-Chicago and then-No. 24 Boise State.

MSU won event titles in three of the five events, and three of the gymnasts set career highs.

“We made a couple mistakes, and we had some highs and lows,” junior Rochelle Robinson said. “But we always have things to improve on.”

Robinson led the Green and White, finishing third overall on the uneven bars thanks in part to a career-high 9.900 in the event.

Senior Katlyn Roggensack also tied a career high with a 9.825 on the floor, helping the Spartans to a season-high 48.825 in the event.

Additionally, sophomore Nicole Argiros set a career high on the vault with a 9.875 while Robinson helped the team’s cause with a 9.850.

“I thought the meet was average for us,” junior Nicole Curler said.

“We definitely can perform better than we did. Personally, it was probably my best meet of the season. Although I didn’t get some of my highest scores, it allowed me to build my confidence for the rest of the season.”

The Spartans will turn their attention to Florida, as the two teams are scheduled to face off at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jenison Field House.

The Gators are coming off a 196.800-195.825 weekend loss to No. 11 LSU. Florida had a season-low score of 48.975 on the bars despite two individual scores of 9.90.

The Spartans have a number of personal ties to the Gators. MSU traveled to Gainesville in 2007, where associate head coach Randy Lane was an assistant coach before coming to MSU that year. Robinson also rotated with members of the team at the NCAA Tournament during her freshman campaign.

“It was very loud, but it was very fun to compete against them because our team kind of stepped up our game a little bit. At that time they were No. 1 in the country, so we wanted to compete at their level,” Curler said of the teams’ last meeting. “I’m hoping that’s what happens again this season.”
