College of Nursing to receive grants

March 15, 2009

The MSU College of Nursing will receive $1.1 million in grants to address a shortage of nurses and nursing educators.

The money, awarded by the Michigan Nursing Corps, will be used to improve Michigan’s nursing workforce, and expedite the degree completion of graduate students through financial aid, a university statement said.

Students, in turn, will be obligated to sign contracts to teach in Michigan nursing education programs for at least five years after graduation.

Because of the insufficient number of faculty, thousands of qualified students are being turned away or placed on program waiting lists, according to MSU.

The Nursing Corps is backed by the Michigan Departments of Community Health and Labor and Economic Growth.
