Depth key for Spartans in first round win

March 21, 2009

Minneapolis — All season long players on the MSU men’s basketball team have been saying they have depth.

On Friday night they went out and proved it.

Five Spartans scored in double-figures — led by junior forward Raymar Morgan and freshman forward Draymond Green with 16 points each — as the Midwest Region’s No. 2 seed beat Robert Morris 77-62 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Metrodome.

“It just shows how deep this team can go,” said Morgan, who advances with his teammates to play No. 10 Southern Cal at 5 p.m. Sunday. “Our team is really deep and we have a lot of scorers who can do different things in a variety of ways and whenever Draymond and guys like that are coming off the bench it’s a plus for us.”

Sophomore guards Kalin Lucas (13 points) and Chris Allen (10) were also key contributors, while senior center Goran Suton had a double-double with 11 points and 17 rebounds.

Even with five players in double-figures, senior guard Travis Walton said the MSU offense is capable of more. He noted sophomore guard Durrell Summers — who struggled once again with three points on 1-for-4 shooting — and others who can make the Spartans even more dangerous.

“I think it’s great but it can be even better,” Walton said. “Durrell didn’t even have double-digits and he’s one of our better scorers, so you can throw that in there. You can even throw (freshman forward Delvon Roe) in there with 10 points he can get, so I think it can get even scarier.”

Cleaner than Windex
If NCAA student-athletes were allowed to sign endorsements, Suton would have an array of glass cleaner companies knocking on his door. The 6-foot-10 senior center grabbed 17 rebounds (12 in the first half) to go along with his 11 points for his sixth double-double of the season.

“We knew coming into this game that we obviously had a height advantage and everything and that was obviously a weakness for them,” Suton said. “That’s something we do our best at and we just went out there and were aggressive on the boards.”

The MSU record for most rebounds in a first or second round game is 27, held by Johnny Green.

Raymar responds
Regardless of the numerous postseason awards won by his teammates, Morgan has been pegged by many the key to a deep tournament run for the Spartans.

All of Morgan’s inconsistencies this season have been based on his illnesses. On Thursday, Morgan told reporters he was 100 percent.

On Friday, he proved that he wasn’t just telling them what they wanted to hear.

Morgan came out playing aggressive in the first half, scoring five points before picking up his second foul with 11:35 remaining. He continued his inspired play in the second half, finishing with 16 and four rebounds, while also playing hard-nosed defense.

“Hopefully,” Morgan said when asked if this was his welcome back party. “I just have to keep it up now and keep getting healthy.”

Broken record
The main concern about Robert Morris coming in was its do-everything guard, Jimmy Chappell. If Spartan fans didn’t hear his name much on Friday night, chances are they already know why — Walton.

The senior guard and 2009 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year strutted his stuff once more, holding Chappell to 11 points on 5-for-14 shooting. As a team, the Colonials shot 41 percent.
