Funding aids MSU biofuel research

March 15, 2009

MSU and Michigan Tech scientists will partner and use $1.4 million in federal funding to solve complex issues surrounding the biofuel industry.

The program will be based at MSU’s Upper Peninsula Tree Improvement Center in Escanaba. It will examine how trees can be used for renewable fuels, such as ethanol, according to a university statement.

The Upper Peninsula Tree Improvement Center is one of 14 Michigan Agricultural Experiment Stations throughout Michigan.

The stations are directly involved in conducting and promoting important research on the forest-based cellulosic biofuels industry.

The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Energy out of the $410 billion federal spending bill approved last Wednesday and is being distributed by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.
