Group collects phones for forces

March 24, 2009

Pak Mail, 4150 Hunsaker Drive, is accepting used cell phones to donate to Cell Phones for Soldiers, a foundation that sends prepaid calling cards to troops.

Cell Phones for Soldiers has collected more than 17,700 cell phones and sent 1,070,000 minutes of talk time to soldiers.

“It’s one of the better things you can do with a used cell phone,” Pak Mail spokesman Tim Poxton said.

The phones are recycled, refurbished and resold to wholesale companies.

Cell Phones for Soldiers has raised more than $2 million and sent more than 500,000 calling cards overseas.

“The average soldier gets 90 to 120 minutes,” Poxton said. “It shows great support for the troops, allowing them to call their families.”
