MSU, U-M to face off outdoors again

March 4, 2009

It’s time for a rematch.

Michigan’s Athletic Department announced Wednesday the university will host an outdoor game at Michigan Stadium against MSU, likely on Dec. 11, 2010.

The Wolverines will host the Spartans for a two-game home series in 2010 on Dec. 10-11, and the outdoor game is expected to be held on the Saturday night of the home stand.

“I’m interested in allowing our student-athletes the opportunity to participate in an event like this, and I look forward to exploring this opportunity in depth and in greater detail with both the University of Michigan and the CCHA,” MSU Athletics Director Mark Hollis said in a statement.

The game mimics “The Cold War,” which MSU hosted in 2001 at Spartan Stadium. The two rival schools skated to a 3-3 tie in front of a world record hockey crowd of 74,544 fans.

The game is still awaiting approval by the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
