Nursing College receives more than $1.1M to fix shortage

The Michigan Nursing Corps is awarding more than $1.1 million in grant funding to the MSU College of Nursing to address a shortage of nurses and nursing faculty, MSU announced today.

The grants are meant to increase the number of nursing faculty through financial aid to students in the College of Nursing’s graduate programs, by encouraging them to graduate faster and give back through nursing education, according to a university statement.

The students will be required to sign contracts to teach in Michigan nursing education programs for at least five years after graduation.

“This is a great achievement for MSU and signifies the hard work being done by the dean and her team to advance nursing,” Michigan’s Chief Nurse Executive Jeanette Wrona Klemczak said in a statement.

The Nursing Corps is funded by the Michigan Department of Community Health and Labor and the Michigan Department of Economic Growth.

“The College of Nursing is delighted with the availability of this support for our students and grateful to the governor for the vision to support the preparation of nursing faculty,” College of Nursing Dean Mary Mundt said in a university statement.

Michigan is experiencing an exponential shortage of both nurses and nurse educators. Due to the insufficient number of faculty, thousands of qualified students are turned away or placed on program waiting lists, according to MSU.

How can you ignore the fact that many hospitals in Michigan—either have a hiring freeze or are laying-off nurses. The would suggest that there are MINIMAL JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR NEW GRAD NURSES in Michigan.
How does this new funding help increase the shortage of clinical training sites for nursing students? Why does MSU keep encouraging students and dumping money into the school of education—worsening the massive oversupply of teachers in Michigan—when there is such a shortage of nurses? Why do we ignore the fact that the AMA intentionally limits the number of medical residents in order to maintain high salaries—despite a shortage of specialty physicians?

There is NOT a single new-grad RN nursing job opening at Sparrow Hospital—according to a recent search there. If you want gainful employment in nursing, education, or engineering, please consider LEAVING the frozen tundra of Michigan and going to a different state that is not GROUND ZERO of America’s recession.

Another sop to her voters by Gov. Job-Killer.

If there is such a great shortage — why don’t the SURGEONS and hospital bosses PAY for this?

Just another Lib-Lie and tax-scam. Disgusting.
