A fire in a fourth-floor room in Owen Hall caused between $10,000 and $15,000 worth of damage Tuesday and prompted 200 to 300 people to evacuate the building, police said.
MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said police responded to the fire at 10:49 a.m. She said the fire did not spread beyond the fourth-floor room where it began, but generated enough heat and smoke to break the room’s window.
McGlothian-Taylor said investigators likely will determine the cause of the fire within the next few days.
The damages estimate does not include damages to personal property in the room. McGlothian-Taylor said police will need more time to compile an estimate of those costs.
Police did not return a phone message Tuesday evening asking whether the fire was the result of an arson.
Police also responded to a fire alarm Tuesday afternoon in the Engineering Building. McGlothian-Taylor said there was no fire, but smoke caused the alarm to go off.
