Rather to give commencement speech

By Chris Vannini Originally Published: 04/29/09 9:09pm 2 comments

TV journalist Dan Rather will be the feature speaker at MSU’s advanced degree commencement May 8, the university announced Wednesday.

Rather also will be given an honorary doctorate of humanities degree.

“With a voice many of us have come to equate with honest journalism, Rather will inspire our advanced degree candidates as they, too, prepare to leave their legacy,” MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon said.

Rather is a former “CBS Evening News” anchor and “60 Minutes” correspondent and has covered every presidential election since 1960.

The ceremony is at 7 p.m. at Breslin Center. Archbishop Desmond Tutu will speak at undergraduate commencements.

I have a lot of respect for Lou Anna K., but that was an idiotic comment. A voice many of us have come to equate with honest journalism? Isn’t this the man that provided forged documents in the 2004 elections with the hopes of influencing voters? The man reported that falsified memos on the president of our country were authentic and suggested that Bush shirked his national guard duties, even though he knew this was untrue. Yeah, it sure sounds like he’s the voice of “honest journalism”. This is ridiculous.
