Still no members added to task force

April 1, 2009

The deadline to form a task force to investigate student concern about Sheila Contreras, director of the MSU Chicano/Latino Studies program was extended until later this month.

College of Social Science Dean Marietta Baba said she hoped for the nine person task force to be formed by April 1, but it is still being assembled, said Michelle Strobel, spokeswoman for the college.

“The dean sent a letter to the students (Tuesday),” Strobel said. “She indicated her goal is to get the committee identified and established by April 17, and to ask for them to report back their findings by June 30.”

At a meeting last week, students said Contreras has attempted to remove a mentorship program, the Chicano/Latino Fellows Program, and has disrespected students who voiced concern about her.

Baba has indicated she wants representation by students, faculty and staff on the task force, and will be talking with the Chicano/Latino studies faculty to get their input, Strobel said.
