Here’s what MSU students had to say about the University of Michigan’s smoking ban.

“Second hand smoking kills people. (A ban) would force people to stop smoking. Even if they did smoke secretly, at least it wouldn’t be in public.”

Shaan Bhargava

accounting freshman

“I think it’s a good thing to ban it inside, but I think it’s OK to be able to smoke outside. It’s kind of people’s choice and that’s their decision.”

Ashley DeRemer

advertising senior

“I feel that it’s not very inclusive to the students in a way … but it’s a detrimental habit in the sense that there is secondhand smoke.”

Maweza Razzaq

interdisciplinary studies in social science and political science senior

“Inside is completely understandable. I don’t know how they would enforce it (outside), but I like the idea.”

Benjamin DeGroot

turfgrass management sophomore

As someone in the healthcare field, I hope they do not ban smoking outside. I hope that people continue smoking as much as possible. Smokers and fat people provide me the best job security, even when the economy sucks.

That is ridiculous. So basically you are saying you hope people get sick just so you can have job security? That is completely ignorant.

I’m not a smoker and I don’t appreciate when I walk out of a building and have to breathe in second hand smoke because people ignore the 25 ft sign. Even then when I’m walking to class I can’t stand walking behind people who are smoking and have to breathe it in. It is disgusting and rude to non-smokers that they have to be surrounded by it. When I’m riding in the car and I have my window down I have to smell it too. I don’t judge people that smoke, nor do I think they should quit if they don’t want to, but I do believe that non-smokers should not have to be inconvenienced in their everyday lives by having polluted air.

It’s not a matter of hoping they get sick, it’s a matter that they WILL get sick. If people want to be stupid and lazy, I can’t say I will feel much sympathy for them. Smoking is a choice.
