Scarves becoming new summer fashion trend

The summer isn’t all about sundresses and tank tops. This season, scarves are taking center stage as they make a transition from a winter to warm weather trend.
“I think fashion is becoming more about accessories and not necessarily about functionality for fashion in the summer,” said Mark Knight, manager for American Apparel, 115 E. Grand River Ave.
While replacing winter clothes with the latest summer trends on the racks, Knight didn’t pack away scarves.
“I thought about getting rid of them, but I saw a writer for Vice Magazine and thought, ‘he looks damn good,’ so I decided to keep it,” Knight said.
The circle scarf, sold at American Apparel, can be worn several different ways.
“It can be worn as a dress, shawl and a head wrap,” Knight said. “It has been a big hit in the winter and hopefully it will be in the summer time.”
Another scarf making its summer debut is the snake scarf.
“It’s light, acrylic and you can rock it in the summer,” Knight said. “It’s not always going to be hot. I think people forget it gets cold at night.”
American Eagle Outfitters also sells fashion scarves. The prices are around $19.50, with the lowest scarf at $9.50. For the same look but at a less expensive price, Target offers an even larger selection with prices ranging from $7.99 to $16.99.
Although they are becoming popular, film studies junior Danielle Schwarz has always had an interest in wearing scarves.
“It’s not a fashion statement,” Schwarz said. “I like accessories and it’s one of my favorite. It has nothing to do with the weather. If it looks good with the outfit, then I’ll wear it.”
The once winter and now all-season trend is getting positive reviews from men and women. Recent MSU graduate Sean Dyer favors the summer scarf trend, but thinks it can be worn incorrectly.
“I think sometimes it’s too much,” Dyer said. “If it’s too loud and takes away from everything else and looks out of place.”
Schwarz said that the most important thing when wearing a scarf is that it matches the rest of the wardrobe.
“It definitely has to work with what your wearing,” Schwarz said. “Never with shorts and tank top and if you’re wearing a T-shirt, only some can pull it off better than others.”
