The cooperative agreement between MSU and the U.S. Department of Energy for the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams was signed today, university officials said.
The agreement will allow the DOE to begin financing the project, according to statement from MSU.
During the construction of FRIB, which is expected to be operational in about a decade, MSU will continue to run the Cyclotron.
FRIB will allow researchers to study rare forms of atoms, called isotopes.
The facility will cost about $550 million.
