Web update: Director of MSU School of Journalism uncertain of her job status

July 5, 2009

Jane Briggs-Bunting, who was asked to resign from her position as director of the MSU School of Journalism last Wednesday, has retained a lawyer to handle negotiations with the university on her behalf, but admits she still isn’t certain of the status of her job.

Briggs-Bunting, who led the School of Journalism for six years and is president of the State News Board of Directors, said she hasn’t heard whether she was suspended by Pamela Whitten, dean of the College of Communication Arts and Sciences, or if she resigned on her own volition.

“I don’t even know right now if I’m suspended or not,” she said. “(The school runs) full-out, year-round, so there’s a lot of loose ends and adjustments that have to be made.”

Concern with the day-to-day operations of the School of Journalism is prevalent, said Darcy Greene, an associate professor of journalism.

“The director does a lot of things, so there’s a lot of ongoing concerns,” she said. “Things that (Briggs-Bunting) does don’t stop because the person has changed.”

Greene said she hasn’t heard any new developments pertaining to Briggs-Bunting’s job status.
“There’s just not much information,” she said.

MSU spokesman Terry Denbow said he was unaware of any developments with the case, and the university had no further comment.

Whitten, whose first day as dean of the College of Communication Arts and Sciences was the same day Briggs-Bunting was asked to resign, did not return calls to her home Sunday.
