After being run over by a truck Monday night near Armstrong Hall, an MSU student remains hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and three local men who were in the truck have been arrested.

Media arts and technology freshman Jonathan Dorton was hit and run over by a pickup truck after becoming involved in a drug deal with the three men in the truck, he said.

Dorton said the accident knocked out one of his front teeth and chipped another, in addition to scrapes on his hands and knees and a tire tread mark on his abdomen.

The driver of the truck, 18-year-old East Lansing resident Shane Sweet, has been arraigned on charges of unarmed robbery and possession with intent to deliver, in addition to charges for felonious assault, according to a statement from MSU Police.

The passengers, 20-year-old Lamickell McGuire and 21-year-old Carlos Colon, III, both of Lansing, were arraigned on charges of possession with intent to deliver and unarmed robbery, according to the statement.

All three are being held at the Ingham County Sheriff’s Department.

MSU police Sgt. Shaun Mills said he could not comment further on the information in the release.

Dorton said he was waiting for a for a friend who planned to sell marijuana to some or all of the men, some of whom Dorton said he knew from his hometown.

Dorton said he was asked to call an acquaintance, who is not an MSU student, so the men in the truck could purchase marijuana from him.

Dorton was waiting near the truck for his acquaintance when the men in the truck saw Dorton pull some money from his pockets and then attempted to grab the money.

“I pulled it out and I was talking to them … The guy (in the truck) saw it and he grabbed my arm with the money and then the driver hit the gas, I let go of the money … and then I fell,” Dorton said.

Dorton said he was pulling the money out of his pockets to sort it.

“I was kind of just waiting for the other dude to show up (and) I just got a thought in my head that I needed to sort it out,” he said. “I kind of already had it counted out, I had like ($237), I was going to take the $37 and put it in my other pocket.”

Dorton remembers running with the car for a couple of seconds before he lost his balance.

Eyewitnesses said they didn’t notice anything unusual until they heard the screeching tires of the truck as it sped away.

“Me and a number of my friends (were) sitting on the stairs outside of Armstrong,” advertising freshman Robert Smith said. “All of a sudden the truck just revs out really loud … then we all noticed this kid is hanging out of the side of it, his arm’s in it and we all get up.”

Smith and his friends quickly called police when they saw the truck’s back right tire run over Dorton.

“His jeans were completely shredded apart, his face had blood on it and he was missing a tooth,” Smith said.

Oh yeah, it’s logical to stand there counting your money in an open parking lot just before a drug deal! This is your brain… Dorton is a brain on drugs!

Good thing weed is illegal.

Somebody smoking weed in the privacy of their own home is SO much worse than accepting incidents like this.

first off, if the drug were legal this would never happen. second off, according to the article Dorton was just a middle man for people who were meeting. Meaning he wasn’t involved with the drugs, just introducing people. According to this he actually had no drugs on him at all, and the money was unrelated. All the top posters can’t read.

I also went to school at him and can say that 1)He definitely was more than a middle man, 2)He is a real nice guy just kind of stupid sometimes and 3)He is in the hospital but doing ok.

I went to school with 2 out of the three guys in the truck, and they are both idiots. Dorton is a fool for even getting involved with them in the first place.

lol yeah Shane Sweet is the dumbest person I have ever met in my life and I knew the day would come when he got caught doing something stupid like this… That’s what people get when they deal with things that are bigger than them.
