Chicano/Latino members to gather

By Heather Guenther Originally Published: 09/16/09 10:25pm Modified: 09/16/09 10:25pm 1 comment

Members of the Chicano/Latino Studies program will converge at noon today outside College of Social Science Dean Marietta Baba’s office to address concerns about students’ treatment by the program’s faculty members and administration.

Students met with Provost Kim Wilcox last Tuesday to discuss student concerns about the program’s director, Sheila Contreras, and Baba’s refusal to initiate Contreras’ removal. A CLS advisory committee formed last spring in response to students’ complaints recommended Contreras’ immediate removal.

In a response to the committee’s recommendations, Baba said the group did not provide evidence to warrant Contreras’ removal under university policy.
