Farmers to gather on Capitol lawn today

By Marissa Cumbers (Last updated: 09/16/09 10:32pm)

Michigan farmers will spend some time on the Capitol lawn today sharing the bounties of their labor in celebration of Select Michigan Week.

More than 50 vendors from across the state will be selling fresh and local Michigan products from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the east lawn of the Capitol.

The event is one of three Select Michigan Farmer’s Markets hosted by the Michigan Food & Farming Systems and the Michigan Department of Agriculture to raise awareness about the importance of supporting Michigan’s agriculture and the local economy.

Products will include local fruits and vegetables, flowers, plants, baked goods, meats and cheeses.

The Food Bank Council of Michigan also will have a booth at the market where shoppers and farmers can donate local food to their area food bank.
