Rally at capitol being held today to save Michigan Promise Scholarship

The MSU College Democrats plan to hold a rally today at the Capitol to save the Michigan Promise Scholarship from elimination in the state’s budget.
Participants will meet at 2 p.m. at the Union where they will take a free bus ride to the Capitol for the rally.
The assembly will begin at 3 p.m. and will include a speech by state Sen. Michael Prusi, D-Ishpeming.
“This is really going to be the last chance for students around the state to really lobby their legislators and say enough is enough — we have to have the (Michigan) Promise Scholarship,” said Mitchell Rivard, president of the MSU College Democrats.
The merit-based scholarship provides up to $4,000 to about 100,000 students attending college in the state, but might be eliminated as part of Michigan’s statewide budget cuts, Rivard said.

I think this is unfair for them to take away our scholarships. We worked hard to pass those tests. Most of us need that $4,000 that was promised to us. This goes to show that all our hard work for this scholorship was good for nothing. Now the message to all high schoolers is to not worry about these tests because they don’t really matter. I am angry as a college student that I might no longer get this money that I worked for and earned.

How are you going to promise money to thousands of high schoolers then say, well im sorry we’re the government and we have decided are promise is being taken back. I understand the budget issues. At least give those who have passed the test and were promised the money.

As an adult with college age children, and a taxpayer, I think you are asking the wrong question. The question should be “When is the government going to stop taking so much of our money so parents CAN afford to help their children with college?” Government money comes from working people like me and your parents.
