Students connect MSU to fashion world
By Anne O'Dell (Last updated: 09/15/09 8:13pm)Christina Goike and Bridgette Gregory are two of MSU’s very own style gurus.
The two journalism seniors blog for the national Web site collegefashionista.com.
The site, which launched Aug. 3, chronicles fashion on college campuses throughout the world, particularly in the U.S.
The two applied for the jobs after an e-mail was distributed by the MSU School of Journalism.
“I’m always surfing Style.com, so this Web site was just what I wanted in a college fashion site,” Goike said.
The site was created by Indiana University alumna Amy Levin, who said she wanted to show students fashion trends at other colleges and universities.
It now includes 16 schools and targets both men and women, offering fashion for both sexes.
“I want people to see what real people are wearing; (the goal) is connecting
fashion with campus,” Levin said.
There are 53 gurus that write for Levin, with two to three gurus per campus.
The Web site includes trends of the week, fashion news, style of the week and photos the gurus take.
It also gives places where students can find similar items to replicate what they see on the Internet.
“I want (the Web site) to be more of an inspiration for students to look at and
get ideas they can apply to their own wardrobe,” Levin said.
Goike said she wanted to get involved because she’d been looking for a way to incorporate her love of fashion with journalism.
The Web site’s reach to all college students makes it unique, Levin said.
“Guys are more accessible for me because I’m in metropolitan places like (New York City) and Los Angeles for internships at trend-reporting companies,” she said.
“It’s easier for me to know what to look for in guys’ fashion.”
Although collegefashionista.com is a blog, Goike said it still has strict deadlines, giving her a taste of real reporting.
Both Goike and Gregory post their information online a week in advance and said it gives them time to change the photos they take or have the blogs edited.
“I have 53 girls respecting me,” Levin said.
“I’m just flattered that they share my vision and ideas about what college students want to see.”
