Web exclusive: Granholm proposes to cut higher education funding by another $30M

By Abby Lubbers (Last updated: 09/08/09 11:22pm)

Michigan universities could be facing larger cuts in the state’s 2010 fiscal year budget and sports fans might have to pay more for sporting event tickets, according to Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s most recent budget recommendations.

Granholm proposed cutting higher education funding by another $30 million in addition the $100 million cut she proposed in February.

“The governor’s plan does preserve the Michigan Promise Scholarship,” Granholm’s spokeswoman Liz Boyd said. “(It) holds that harmless.”

The higher education cuts are the fourth largest recommended in Granholm’s plan. She also proposed an additional $150 million cut to community health, $100 million more in proposed human services reductions and $78 million in cuts to corrections.

Sports fans also would be taxed under a proposed $87 million live entertainment tax.

“It applies to all sporting events, both college and professional,” Boyd said.

Anyone who buys tickets to those games will be taxed, she said.

The latest budget plan also includes a $685 million increase in revenue from the 2009 fiscal year, and $572 million in spending cuts.

To avoid a state government shutdown, the budget must be approved by Oct. 1.

Granholm and her staff should get a salary cut.

This is one of the worst governors in the history…

If the school raises tuition in the middles of the semester I will have to drop out because I don’t have any money to pay for school..even with my loans I wouldn’t have enough.

FIRE GRANHOLM!!!!

It’s not the governor that is the problem here – it’s the House and the Senate. They won’t vote for the revenue to fund higher education and scholarships – matter of fact, the Senate wants to cut all scholarships out completely. Granholm is trying to save them.

Better look deeper at the situation and support the person who is trying to help you – because the rest are just waiting to make big cuts to colleges, far deeper than the governor has suggested.

Scott: There’s an old say….“it’s lonely at the top”. Well my friend…..guess where Jen is? The buck stops at her doorstep buddy! She needs to get her tail on the closest bus and head back to Canada. A lame excuse for a leader, and one who has cost us all dearly! What a loser.
