Word on the street

By Elizabeth Brumfield (Last updated: 09/01/09 11:17pm)

What do you think is the most pressing issue for students this year?

“Cultural differences, race or religion. A lot of the diversity around this campus is what I’ve seen the most in papers.”

Hannah Abdelazia
dietetics freshman

“All the mess that’s going on with the (Michigan Promise Scholarship). Because I know for freshmen and sophomores it’s only $500, but there (are) still your books and everything. And I know for juniors it’s about $1,000 and that can make a big difference, especially right now. The immediate impact is crazy.”

Amin Smith
engineering sophomore

“Cut the professors’ pay and give a break to the students and maybe more students will be able to attend instead of dropping out their junior year, because that’s what three of my friends had to do.”

Cathie Kaigin
advertising senior

“The most pressing issue is tuition definitely, because of the economy and the recession. Scholarships were tough this year; I don’t think they gave out a ton because they don’t have the money. I think students are trying to find jobs because they know they are going to have to pay more than their older brothers or sisters did.”

Elliot Grandia
communication freshman

“Probably how big the campus is, and not knowing where your classes are. Especially for freshman this year, it’s just so big and you just get lost.”

Naja Tatum
education sophomore

“The most pressing issue is financial aid, because, me for example, since this is my fifth year, I lost some of my financial aid, so I have to go and appeal – to try and get my loans and grants back.”

Tiffany Stover
premedical senior

“I think the most pressing issue for students right now is financial aid and everything to do with money and apartments and school”

Natalie Benedettini
retailing sophomore

“Well, you know. Just figuring out where classes are and everything is, and getting used to the new environment”

Erik Dudek
mechanical engineering freshman
