Committee members named for Chicano/Latino Studies
Tweet
An advisory committee expected to provide guidance to the director of the Chicano/Latino Studies program is moving forward after about a one-month hiatus.
On Monday, College of Social Science Dean Marietta Baba announced four CLS Faculty Policy Advisory Committee members and two ex-officio members in an e-mail.
Baba created the committee last month in response to a CLS Office Operations and Implementation Advisory Committee recommendation calling for the offices of the provost and social science dean to allocate more resources to ease CLS Program Sheila Contreras into her position.
Baba appointed Lisa Fine, a Department of History professor and Center for Gender in Global Context co-director, and René Rosenbaum, a Department of Community, Agriculture, Recreation and Resource Studies associate professor, to two faculty positions.
The remaining two faculty positions and two ex-officio positions were filled from a pool of about 17 candidates, Baba said. Ramona Fernandez, Department of Writing, Rhetoric and American Culture associate professor, and Manuel Chavez, Department of Journalism associate professor, both received faculty positions on the committee.
Baba appointed Ruben Martinez, director of the Julian Samora Research Institute and a sociology professor, as the committee chairperson Sept. 8.
“We don’t want anybody to just agree, agree, agree all the time,” Baba said. “We want different ideas to be put out there and debated. If that didn’t happen, it’d be a disappointment, but I wouldn’t call that conflict.”
In contrast to previous attempts to bring CLS community members together, Martinez said he believes this committee will set aside any differences and work together to offer advice to Contreras.
“This is all about the betterment of the program and I believe the committee members are able to serve on it because that’s what they want,” Martinez said. “They bring good faith to the effort and they bring an interest in seeing the program stabilized.”
Rosenbaum, who met a majority of the committee members, said he is excited to work with the group.
“I have high regard and respect for all of them,” Rosenbaum said. “I think they share with me an interest in making the program serve the needs of our community, including our students and starting with our students.”
Baba said her office will schedule the group’s first meeting for later this month.
Group members will race to develop CLS program bylaws before the end of the semester in response to a mandate from Provost Kim Wilcox, who made the commitment to a group of faculty, undergraduate students and graduate students upset by Contreras’ and Baba’s actions regarding the program.

how do students feel about this?
it seems like students have a lot of concerns about the program, it’s odd to think that the writer wouldn’t ask them what they thought.

so if cls is a discipline, shouldn’t people who actually teach chicano or latino studies be on this committee?
doesn’t rene rosenbaum teach agriculture?
WTF are these administrators doing to the CLS program??
Are they trying to purposely sabatoge it by putting in a bunch of incompetent people just because they’re mexican.
this is messed up. how do i get involved?

“group members will race to develop CLS program bylaws before the end of the semester”
The bylaws are already written…if they would have been approved two years ago, we wouldn’t be in this situation and sheila would have been removed when 8 out of the 9 CLS faculty gave her a vote of no confidence (the 9 who actually teach CLS not jst those w/Spanish surnames, or librarians who pretend to b faculty)
This is just one more example of Dean Baba’s incompetency…she can’t even tell who is a chicano and/or U.S. latino studies faculty member b/c i only see two people on that whole committee who may possibly have a sliver of background research in CLS everyone else is there cuz they’re sheila and Baba’s friends….

If that’s the case, why isn’t she listening to the students?? Obviously they have a pretty strong opinion about whats going on and are ready to have their voices heard.

When academic issues are to be resolved it is not necessary to have academic members of that discipline since most of the aspects are administrative.
As I have been saying all along, academic issues are not solved by the administration. Faculty has the power to check curriculum and revise other academic issues.

A free Lunch
(10/07/09 12:03am)Report
I must be nice that Dean Baba developed the neo-colonial dream team. Ruben Martinez has the power to pay for more free lunches with tax payers dollars. I guess making $170.000 dollars a year is not enough to feed his fat teddy bear. What could Diana Rivera offer to the table she does not understand the meaning of Chicano/Latino Studies. Remember she only buys the books, but do not read the books. Again, what could lovely Rene do for this committee. What can he offer to the table? He could offer only pre school Agricultural reports to this committee. How could Ramona Fernandez help Chicano/Latino Studies? She has never taught a Chicano/Latino Studies course and has not publish a scholarly article in 10 years. Could we consider her a CLS scholar? I do not think so. Manuel Chavez, has never consider himself a Chicano/Latino Studies scholars. How could he help this committee if he never taught and took a CLS course in his life? Lisa Fine, why do you agree to join Dean Baba dream team? A point of advise maybe you could drop out of this committee to help your status at MSU. Finally, Luis Garcia, you should stay out of this committee. You are doing a good job as the CAMP director. Do not take away time from your busy day to be part of this committee. As for Dean Baba, your neo-colonial dream team will not fix the current CLS problems at MSU. Good night and Good Luck!!!

Wow. Do you students/faculty/grad students know how you sound? I’m not involved in this but since this has been in the State News recently I’ve read through things. My impression is that these students have lost sight of what their original complaint is. I haven’t seen any suggestions or ideas to make things better by these young people. All they have been asking for is the termination of the director. They yell at the provost. They swear on these forums. They fail to do their homework on academic governance. They attack people personally. They refuse to see other sides of an argument. They have become entrenched in removing the director rather than solving a problem. It has become painfully evident reading through the posts and the documents. Even if they had valid concerns a year ago, these students have lost credibility.
Ironic

I find it interesting how MSU students treat their fellow Chicano/Latino counterparts. Are they teaching this in the intro classes now? They have created processes of social exclusion and social marginalization. They use language to humiliate other Chicano/Latino scholars. If this is how they feel about their MSU counterparts, one can only imagine the disdain they have for the Chicano staff members, the Mexican Mechanic, The Latino Janitor, the Chicano Cook and the Local Latino community.
Creating a boundary of what a REAL Chicano looks and what a FAKE Chicano looks like is akin creating processes to purifying the group based on ersatz characteristics. Oh wait, where have I heard about this before? Didn’t somebody try to do this in Europe?
Every semester I am asked to serve on search committees or evaluate programs outside of my training because they want an objective viewpoint on the quality of the program. If this vetting process does not take place, then a program will simply reproduce itself with its deficiencies and weaknesses. If you simply limit the discussion to a few scholars, for every evaluation, you create processes of intellectual inbreeding and the faculty/staff/students no longer have a rational and balance point of view because of the intellectual inbreeding of ideas. Think critically and think carefully. With each statement of humiliation and disrespect towards other MSU Chicano and Latino staff/faculty you lose valuable support from National Chicano/a Leaders!!!!!!!! And soon it will be us asking the Dean to remove you from MSU for your egregious academic misconduct, which is detrimental to the university’s mission of free ideas!
You have a right to FREE speech, but you DO NOT have a right to marginalize and humiliate anyone, whether it is on campus or off campus! If you continue to engaged in this type of behavior you are no different than the hate groups that uses language as a symbolic weapon!

Calling a Chicana “Malinche”? Really? Is that what this has come to? You chingones have learned the wrong lessons from the failures of the Chicano movement. That’s right I said FAILURES. The exclusionary discourse, the anti-woman, anti-queer, heterosexist, purist, nostalgic, small-minded bullshit that recreated all of the hated hierarchies inside a crystallized version of culture. Que viva Aztlan (a mythic homeland built on the erasure of Indian people, not your precious AZTECS, but Hopi, Navajo, Pueblo, the people who your ancestors hunted and killed). As Gloria Anzaldúa once said:“grow or die.” Maybe you should start reading her work instead of memorizing “I am Joaquin.”

Dear Tecate-lipoca,
I am not, as you assume, Sheila Contreras. But I am a Chicana, and a feminist, who takes great offense at the sexist and misogynistic tone of your remarks. I do hope that the Xicana soldiers you are leading into battle come to see you for the offensive, bullying, woman-hating blowhard that you clearly are before it is too late for them. And if pointing out the contradictions and inconsistencies of the nationalist ideology you are promoting is “poisoning the well” then call me a well-poisoner. I’d rather be that than someone who blindly parrots an exclusionary, reductive, and narrow form of cultural nationalism that even radical Chicanos and Chicanas in the 1970s criticized.
