We deserved to win that game but had some unfortunate events.

Greatest game I’ve been to, and I was at the 2004 Big House loss. Still, we played well and deserved to win. However, the winds sometimes blow the other way.

Thank you Coach D and staff!

Thank you MSU Football with special note to White, Jones, Cousins and most of all Swenson.

Thank you fans that stuck it out there at the game with me. Much colder in Michigan then in my Cali crib, but worth the trip!

	Go Green!

	Go White!

	GO STATE!

This game was sooo close till the very end…state put up an amazing fight and im not sad we lost..some of the plays especially the last one including the touchdown were brilliant compared to some of the other games we played this year..It’s too bad we lost but it was still a very good game! Nice Job!

Nice words hawkfan98. I will say that I am very disappointed but not upset. Tough battle for both teams for a full 60 minutes. Some unfortunate calls and penalties but overall great football. Just wish we could have covered that slant better. Oh well. Now please, just don’t loose to someone stupid like IU and make it all for not.

Then people act surprised when they play bad- they only ever have a good season every ten yrs or so. The schools academic record/ rankings and the football will always be at the bottom

There must be some kind of automated-“insult” generator that UofM fans use whenever they’re team blows it. Reference to “history” of program? Check. Reference to records spanning back since before the century? Check. Completely non-relevant (and false) remarks about MSU’s academic rankings? Double-check. Yawn. (I’m an MSU grad currently getting his finance MBA from Columbia. I’m glad Michigan accepted me though, I’m sure they would have been a great fallback school until I could transfer).

I am proud of the way our team played. Nevertheless, some investigative journalism could show up those poor calls by the officials – all those plays in 15 seconds, the fumble they didn’t notice, the non-existent personal foul. Radio announcers George Blaha and Jim Miller pointed out the high number of calls refs messed up so far this season in MSU games, and USA deplored this same fact throughout the country. I would personally like to know whether the officials are merely incompetent or being bribed. Given the big money that college football programs generate, they deserve better officiating.

Kudos to MSU defense. They came to play. Hard hits…just like the D’s of old.

Agree with many here that the refs sure seemed in the bag for Iowa. The personal foul call on the very hard hit by Ware came after the refs confered. I wonder: had the Iowa kid jumped right up would the flag have been thrown? Glad the young man appeared OK.

All in all: proud of the kids for the way they played. Best game I’ve seen in years.

Very happy to see some new wrinkles out of Treadwell. But…Narduzzi and the prevent have got to go. 1:46 left and we go “PREVENT” and allow them to drive the field. Keep up the pressure in Stanzi’s face; don’t allow him time to set up. Narduzzi is a chump for going “prevent.” Never will understand that.

Disapointed? Yeah, but for the first time in a while very happy with the effort and very happy with the hard-hitting “D.” Make ‘em hurt! Make ‘em pay. Iowa will need an extra day or two this week to recover. Just like the MSU defenses I remember from the old days. For that I’m liking what I see. Not yet ready to drink from the collective green Kool aid for MD” yet. This is why I said in previous blogs,” not yet fully delivered.” Good teams find ways to lose close teams; Great tems just the opposite. MSU has not turned the corner yet on that!

Now we face the inevitable task of keeping the kids “up” for practise and not falling apart next week at Minnesota. We can still salvage something from this season. Realistically maybe 7-5.

7-5? Unlikely with this coaching. More like 6-6, and a trip to the Pizza Bowl. At least we’ll have a chance to get some payback with Central.

I’ve never seen such a coaching breakdown, as I do with MSU’s defense when games get tight. Does the Def. Coordinator piss his pants, and a handy spectator calls the plays while he’s in the bathroom hiding, or what? Every close game we piss away because of poor defensive calls.

I sure admire the players for showing up with such inept coaching in the clutch. Here’s a hint, Dantonio, instead of looking pouty on the sidelines when your defense gets put in lousy positions by insane playcalling, pick up the headset and start calling the plays yourself. We’re not paying you the big bucks to huff and puff on the sidelines and give inane press conferences after your coaching staff pisses the game away.

We (Fans AND coaches) need to look at those two penalties and realize they WERE penalties. There CANNOT be any helmet to helmet contact like that. We should also be ashamed of the way we continued to boo as Iowa’s player (Sandeman) was carried off of the field. I’m as frustrated with the fans behavior as I was with the players lack of execution. Could be worse though. Look at Nebraska yesterday with 8 turnovers!!

Good game last night, Sparty—well fought. Keep in mind that there were calls (no-calls) that went in YOUR favor as well. Your TE did move and Iowa was called for movement prior to the snap…and there was a clear pass-interference on the sidelines that went uncalled too (and the TV guys noticed it). The 3-rd down play at the goal in the final series could have been a P/I too…

The reffing was not great…but it was not great on both sides.

MSU went into a “prevent defense” in the final series—and we all know that the “prevent defense” prevents you from winning. they should have stuck with the sceme that got them that far…but instead gave Stanzi time and space to work with.

RE EMILY: please ignore her, she’s just a Wolverine (or Wal-Mart Wolvie) who’s shown she’s simply in imbecile… move on…

RE THE GAME: I love my Sparties, and believe in Dantonio— this team was left for dead after 1-3, but MD pumped them up to go toe-to-toe with the No. 6 team in the nation… That said, there’s something seriously wrong with the Defense/D approach of this team. Pat Narduzzi is directly or indirectly responsible for the absurd number of late comeback losses this team has suffered in recent times. Consider, we’re only 8 games into the season, but have had 2 games (CMU and this one) where we lost on the last play of the game (and for good measure, our undisciplined stupidity in the off-sides penalty allowed that last dagger to be applied in a replayed last play!) … A late drive cost us the Notre Dame game (even, yes, with Cousin’s late pick; I don’t blame this outstanding kid at all)… and we ALL KNOW we should have cruised to victory in regulation against U-M only to allow 2 late drives to send it into an absurd OT that we escaped by the skin of our teeth thanks to Chris L. Rucker’s heroic INT…
Dantonio is the dream coach MSU’s been looking for (and knowing our history, we’d better do all we can to hold onto him lest he leave and, a la Saban, win a Nat’l Championship for some other higher-paying school). But Coach MD’s going to have to suck it up, forget U. Cincy loyalties and toss Narduzzi under the bus, because this clearly incompetent coordinator is dragging Dantonio’s good work down like an anchor.

Chris Rucker had a rt. to chuck the Iowa player..ball was not in the air yet..Iowa receiver fell down..that is not holding..replay showed that also..Yes these refs also missed a fumble by Iowa..was not reviewed..It looked like we got screwed at home..Refs definately favored Iowa..Taking away a victory from Michigan State..How do you throw a flag 2 minutes after..You are rt…If the Iowa receiver would have popped-up..there would have been no call..Why don’t we play touch football..

The defensive coordinator should be sacked immediately. A handy spectator could very do a better job than that piece of horsesh— play calling. Sparty D was stellar all game… let them do their job! What prevent defense in the history of NCAA or NFL football has ever won a game. Man, I’m still pissed at that bullsh—.
It was a memorable fight and, certainly, one to be examined by the coaches considering the incredible amount of plays Iowa got in that last drive, all the penalties against the Spartans and all the plays against Iowa that the refs missed. I’m not taking credit away from Iowa, but there are things that should be re-examined.

Specifically, the hit by Jeremy Ware was the worst penalty and the one that changed the outcome of the game. Earlier in the day I was watching an ACC game and, in a play were there was a helmet to helmet contact and the offensive guy didn’t even see the hit coming, there wasn’t a penalty. The Big Ten refs have to stop calling the game based on how a player reacts physically after the play. The player from Iowa saw Ware coming and he made the decision to just try to run over him, so he got a great hit. Its not Ware’s fault that the Iowa player didn’t react or couldn’t get up instantly after the play. This is why you play football and not baseball. This is why there are players designed to tackle the opponent no matter what.

Finally, I have to agree that MSU has been persecuted by terrible penalty calls from the Big Ten refs. Maybe its not in every game, but I have seen it in a couple of games now. Its not like MSU is the most undisciplined team out there and, as a matter of fact, we aren’t. Our coaches are doing a great job. Its just that, for a wide variety of reasons, things simply don’t go your way.

As this game stays in the past, I would like to redirect the attention to the future.

Michigan State University announced this past week the creation of a scholarship fundraiser program for students in which the University will match every $2 from a donation with $1.

Its a great program that has the goal of raising at least $21 millions.

As a current student, I care about my fellow students and the University. In tough times is essential to maintain the financial health of our University in good shape for a better impact when the economy improves and to lower the risks of students leaving their studies due to financial difficulty. Obviously, I don’t know if this program will help me, but at least it will help fellow Spartans. Help us.

“Another late penalty flag hurt the the Spartans when MSU intercepted a Stanzi throw in the red zone, but was called for holding, nullifying the pick.”

Check the replay. The flag was out before the ball left Stanzi’s hands. Say what you want about the helmet-to-helmet, but that call was legit. You can’t pull a receiver down by his shoulder pads to gain position. And again, the flag was not late on this call. Seriously, do your research next time before you write the story.

Let’s examine the facts, shall we. In order for the Big Ten to remain relevant the league must have representation in the top tier. With PSU and OSU out, and Meeechigan stumbling around the league is losing revenue big time. Opportunities are lost every day to score the big bucks, TV revenue, bowl revenue. This is big business. The only way to keep any light shining the Big Ten way is to have an undefeated team in the top ten. All that hype sells…and makes $$$. Face it, the refs were told if it’s close call it for Iowa. This keeps the Big Ten relevant. Iowa loses and what happens: the league…once dominant but falling fast to the SEC’s of the football world would fade even faster. Can’t have that, sooo…Iowa must win. Mark my words, Iowa will not lose the rest of the year. All to assure that the league is properly represented in the national bowl picture. Face facts, it’s the SEC and Cincinnati and BOISE STATE. When was the last time one of the major networks handled a Big Ten game? Been a while. No longer relavant = no more moolah. Can’t have that = Iowa must win…and win they will for the rest of the year.

	It’s about being relevant.

Hate to sound so “conspiratorial” but the refs are clearly marching to higher orders from the league office. Lot’s of smoke filled rooms. The outcome of these games, especially those games that are RELEVANT, are decided well in advance. This hurts the game and the schools and the kids and the fans. It’s no longer just a game. Been this way for a while anyway.

	Eyes wide open now.

The holding call was legit. The helmet to helmet call was too. A dirty hit injured the Iowa receiver.

MSU played a great game. Iowa was lucky to escape with a win.

The fans were horrible, though. They threw those green glow sticks all over the field, and booing when a guy is laying on the ground hurt is just low. Have some class.

Reality check: Sims dropped two perfect passes by Cousins. Gantt dropped another. Jerel Worthy jumped offsides for contact twice which infuriated Dantonio.

And again, the prevent defense prevented another W. It’s not going to be productive to complain about officiating and time-keeping, because these are stacked factors which will always be biased against msu.

Get over it, we just need to do what we did against Umich. Poor officiation can be outplayed with heart, honesty, and clean football.

I respect the opponent and I am a true believer of being the best and toughest with class.

Now, I have to say that the fans had every right to react the way they did to the different calls made by the refs. Football is a contact hit. You don’t call penalties based on replays from the screen or based on how the other player reacts after the play. I would like to see what would happened if a defensive player doesn’t get up instantly after a play. Would they call a penalty or something? Of course no!

The Iowa player saw Ware coming and he decided to challenge him. The Iowa player lowered to get more leverage against Ware but Ware didn’t go down with him so he got hit on the side. The replay shows that as Ware came up he hit the Iowa player on the helmet. But how many times that doesn’t happen in a game?

Dantonio should tell his players to stay in the ground, not move and wait for the personal foul penalty after every tackle.

This is, in part, why the Big Ten is getting harassed by other conferences when they take the field.

The kid cannot even spell “football,” let alone let his scUM-sucking program he never attended to get its ass kicked by Penn State.

As for the game, we missed opportunities. 1st and goal on the one and couldn’t score a TD. I mean, just pound it up the middle or QB sneak it. The personal foul was horrible, the non-called fumble was a disgrace and running four plays in 15 seconds is nearly impossible.

Oh well, let Iowa go to the Rose Bowl and get blown out by USC. Then we’ll see if Stanzi thinks he’s still hot sh!t

What a great Big 10 show down! Two well coached teams that played with passion! As a die hard Hawkeye fan I have to agree that the officiating was sub par, but it is all perspective. I watched the game again this morning and could not believe the number of no calls on obvious interference and holding situations commited by MSU!

Reality – officiating is frequently subjective and there was way too much of that on Saturday night in BOTH directions! In the end it was balacned.

Congratulations Spartans on having such a great team and future! Sincerely hope you win all the rest!

I find it quite interesting that the Iowa fans posting here seem to be have more sportsmanship/insight than the interlopers from the elitist school to the east. I’m curious what category of UMer these posters fall into: 1) rejected MSU applicant, 2) actual UM student, 3) alumni, 4) UM wannabe who neither went to UM nor donates to UM, or 5) just another elitist in general.

Why go through out the practices and pep talks when a time keepers error or a referees error cost you the game. How can you defend against those kind of calls? It’s just not right or fair. When will time keepers and referres be held accountable for their mistakes. I don’t want to hear “to error is human”. They get PAID not to make error’s. Where else can you keep making mistakes and continue to keep your job? What can be done about this? GO MSU. I love ya.

Everyone – 1 play doesn’t change a game like it or not. Yes, all these events do affect it, but more could have been done. Starting with the prevent defense – yet again.
The late defensive holding, not pass interference as everyone is calling it – was legit. Sucks, but it was the right call

The helmet to helmet personal foul was wrong for several reasons.
Yes, their helmets hit, it is football and it happens. However, he did not lead with his helmet, you can clearly see his arms extending trying to make the hit. All the people complaining about this call/ saying it was a cheap shot have never played football in their lives.

The second thing is the fact there was no flag thrown until the player was down. That is illegal and calls cannot be made that way. Just as you cannot call on penalty on a replay.

IF the ref called it right away, before he knew the player was injured, I may not have had as big a problem with it, wrong call or not atleast they called it right away on his best judgement.

There were bad calls and no calls both ways, these just happened at the end of the game which makes them seem larger.

Lets not foget if the D made a few stops and didn’t give 1-15 yards per catch with a full minute and a half left, it wouldn’t have mattered what these penalties were
