Rock band U2 slated to perform at Spartan Stadium in June '10

U2 will rock Spartan Stadium next summer.

The internationally-known rock group has confirmed a June 30 concert for summer 2010 as a part of its U2 360 tour. According to a press release from the tour’s promoter, Live Nation, the East Lansing stop is one of 44 cities on the North American leg of the tour. It is sponsored by BlackBerry.

Live Nation confirmed Monday that Spartan Stadium will be a part of the tour, which was rumored last month.

Spartan Stadium can hold up to 75,000 people and university spokesman Terry Denbow said the university and the community will come together to facilitate the influx of people coming into East Lansing.

“There’s logistical challenges to things like this that people don’t even realize,” he said. “(The university and the community) know how to come together to do things both effectively and efficiently.”

University spokesman Kent Cassella said a committee met last week for its first meeting regarding the concert. The committee will continue to meet until the details are worked out about concert specifics.

“(There are) a lot of questions that don’t have answers,” Cassella said.

The university and the concert promoter are working together to put on the concert, and it will be staffed through the Breslin Center and Spartan Stadium staff, said Greg Ianni, senior associate athletics director for facilities and sports management. Ianni said the concert will operate similarly to football games. The only major renovation to the stadium will be replacing the turf after the concert, an expense covered by U2.

“Their setup will damage the turf to the point where it can’t be fixed,” Ianni said.

Fans such as English senior Michael Mazur already are waiting for tickets to go on sale for the concert. Mazur has seen the band three times and plans to attend the concert this summer.

“I’m a really crazy U2 fan,” he said. “I intend to get general admission tickets and camp out as long as it takes to be No. 1.”

Some said the increase of people in East Lansing will stimulate the economy, especially during the summer months when there is less student activity.

“East Lansing is familiar with hosting a big number of people just because of football games,” said Tracey Shepard, manager of marketing and communication for the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce. “I think it will mean substantial economic opportunities for the region, especially in the summer months when businesses don’t have that student population to work off of.”

Some venues for the concert already have sold out, but tickets will not go on sale for most North American concert dates until November. An exact date for the ticket sales has not been specified. General ticket prices range from $30 to $95, and seating positions can be found on the band’s Web site.

Im surprised no toolboxes have decided to tell everybody how much they hate U2 yet… I’m sure they’ll come soon though – it’s like some sort of pathetic compulsion.

I’m not going to say how much I hate U2, because honestly, I don’t really know anything about them except that they suck, and the fact that they are still this popular is a sign of how stupid people have become. So, no, I don’t hate them, I just think that they are an example of how dead art really is.

I agree with me, it is incredibly lame that a bunch of toolboxes that hate U2 have to go and give everybody else a hard time. Do we give Fall Out Boy fans, or Bowling For SOup fans a hard time because their bands are lame? NO! Because U2 fans are respectable, and we have a great deal of respect for other people and their taste in music.

I remember once a long time ago my grandmother heard of U2 for the first time. She was only about 18 at the time, and just got over her Dinah Shore phase.

She saw U2 and was incredibly excited about finally seeing one of them new rock and or roll bands. Unfortunately there was a bunch of people at the show who hated U2 as much as the Ruskies, and were banging into and assaulting members of the audience just there to dance.

My dear granny was slammed to the floor where a group of rotten skinheads tap danced on her brand new purse, stealing the contents like so many Russians. Also like Russians, they drank copious amounts of lighter fluid, then blew the flames into the air in true KISS style, burning the rafters of the arena and causing a collapse which annihilated 27 people in the great U2-Skinhead fight of 81. Twas terrifying.

So all of you U2 haters can go to hell.

Ha. The fact that the best you people can come up with is “OMG THEY SUCK!!@#@!” is a perfect example of how stupid people have become. If all you can say is that you don’t know anything about one of the biggest bands of all time, except that you think they “suck,” it’s just proof of how braindead you are.

For the sake of not sounding like “Toolbox,” I’ll say that I don’t think MUSE “sucks.” They were just ridiculously boring and not entertaining.

I am by no means a big u2 fan. I only like one song, Sunday Bloody Sunday. That being said, what’s being completely missed by the haters and the lovers is how this will be a good thing for MSU. It’s a high profile band making an appearance in front of huge audience. Plus the economical impact it will make. Stores, eateries, and hotels will benefit.
