U2 concert holds little value for current MSU generation

(Last updated: 10/27/09 7:29pm)

The fact that U2 has been chosen to come play at Spartan Stadium this summer is very unfortunate. It just goes to show how out of touch the university is with the student body at times.

The majority of our generation couldn’t care less about U2. Most of the students will be out of town when the concert is occurring, anyway. I fear that our concert budget probably is mostly gone now.

We should have spent the money on less expensive, more modern bands that actually are intriguing to students.

After all, who wants to watch a bunch of 35-year-olds (and older) noodle-dance to “Elevation”?

Jim Mora is kind of a moron.

What does the University has to do with U2 choosing Spartan Stadium for their concert?

In fact, is better for the University because U2 pays for the use of the Stadium, so that’s money coming in to MSU in times when we need it, and that’s great for the local businesses that need a financial boost during the summers since most of the students leave campus and their activities are reduced.

So, Mora, it is of little value to you, but I assure you that there’s a lot of people from Canada, Chicago, Michigan, and the Midwest that will make the trip.

I agree with the comment above, I cannot wait for them to come to east lansing. I think its great for the city and Lansing is in the center of everything in the state. And a ton of students know who u2 is!

Everyone knows U2. Additionally, the concert is in the middle of June. The goal is not for the students. Personally, I think it’s great for Lansing music, as a lot of big acts skip it for GR or Detroit.

I'm sick of coulda, woulda, shoulda

Rarely have I seen a more clueless letter here – and that’s saying something.

1) I’d like to know where Mr. Moran got all of his data from when he claims that young people don’t care about this concert.

B) This may be one of the biggest events to come to MSU / Lansing for a long time. Hopefully it will provide a boost to the economy in an otherwise slow period.

2) Perhaps Mr. Moran would be more intruiged by such wonderful “bands” as The Jonas Brothers, Hannah Montana, and Taylor Swift. After all – they seem to be much more in tune with what young people want.

Interesting...

Maybe Jimmy should stick to posting pictures of himself in his underwear on facebook… because he is clearly out of his element on this one.

U2 is a highly respected band that should draw tons of interest and fans… The letter writer’s name should be: JIM MORON.

U2 is a waste of eardrum space. how can you still listen to a band who hasnt put out any real music since October in the early 80’s. they suck, i mean how many times can you listen to where the streets have no names or mysterious ways before you throw up. listen to a great hall of fame band like Plain White Tee’s!!! FOOLS!!!!

Agree

10/28/09 2:40pm

I totally agree. I mean, U2 is OLD! Who likes OLD people?? Who cares if they sell 60,000 tickets. They’re still OLD.

We should try to get AWESOME people like Kanye to perform here. We don’t want him to think that MSU doesn’t like black people!! Or Lady Gaga. She would TOTALLY sell HUNDREDS of tickets here. OMG that would RULE.

Chuck

What modern band would be intriguing to the majority of Mr. Mora’s generation? This isn’t a free concert is it? This is income for the university. What “concert budget” is he writing about? He writes that students could care less about U2, and the next sentence is how the students “would be out of town” anyway. So if an event takes place on university grounds, whether students are in town or not, it needs to appeal to the “majority” of the student generation? ...

Hey Jim,

You’re an idiot. U2’s concert at OU a few weeks ago netted OU more than half a million dollars in fees & other revenue.

The concert being held at State has little to do with the university itself and more to do with Spartan Stadium being one of the few venues that can contain the crowd that will come to the concert.

After having performed to three million people in just two months of concerts, the only facts that remain are:

1.

LOL!! Kanye West?! Don’t worry, he’ll run up on the stage and interrupt the concert and exclaim that he is STILL looking for his relevance!

Mr. Mora is more than an idiot. He’s an embarassment to the University.

And remember all those insipid “old” comments when you are in your 40’s.

If you don’t like u2 don’t go. The amount tourism dollars this band creates when it tours is astonishing. U2 = good for your economy. I love the quote about them being old, yeah your immune from aging. You people actually go to university?

I think its funny out of all these comments there is only one person who agrees with Jimmy. I hope he reads all of these and realizes how big of a fool he is. I am 22 and U2 is my favorite band. They appeal to all generations, not just young college/high school ‘kids’. Grow up.

Kanye West

10/29/09 2:17pm

Yo, “Agree,” your comment was dumb and all that, and Imma let you finish, but Jim Mora’s letter about U2 was the dumbest letter of all time! Of all time!

Playoffs? Dont talk about a playoffs.

10/29/09 2:56pm

Why would you even bother writing something like this? You thought people would agree with you? Care? Did you envision being carried around on people’s shoulders for writing such a brave letter?

You’re an utter waste of opinions.

I never thought I would say this, but I agree with Kanye West’s comments above!

Jim Mora is a disgrace.

What’s he going to say next? That the younger generation holds little value for the Beatles, Springsteen or Dylan?

What an idiot to write something like this. It just goes to show how out of touch Jim Mora is with reality.

Jim,

Who do you think many of the bands you listen to today were influenced by? Chances are, 85% will say U2. The future should always respect and learn from the past. U2 has sold more records than The Beatles, and very few contemporary groups would dog them out. You need to re-think this stance.

11/01/09 7:42pm

I’m having trouble understanding how someone can say U2 isn’t popular with this generation of college students. Even harder to understand is why Mora can’t appreciate the band’s enormous fanbase, and what a fantastic boost this is going to be for the East Lansing economy in what would normally be a huge dry spell.

I’m graduating in December, but I’ll be back next June for this concert.

I am well aware of the delusion of msu students that they are the only people who reside in the lansing, east lansing area. . . because I was once a student their however speaking for the “old” people in their 30’s the fact that MSU is holding a HUGE venue such as U2 is exciting and wonderful and I personally along with my other old fogey friends are looking forward to seeing a classic and well established band with a large following and great music come to the town in which we to live and pay taxes by the way. . . so thank MSU for catering to your entire city!!! (and alumni)

What a ridiculous rant. What are you talking about???? Just because you don’t like U2 doesn’t make it a bad idea. What a dunce.

Not an old geezer

11/05/09 9:03am

U2? You have to be kidding? They were relevant to a college student in 1981 when they first came to East Lansing but 29 years later? What a joke, just like seeing Depeche Mode headlining Lollapalooza. They may be big for those over 30, but not for a typical college student. Let’s have Bell X1 come play, the best Irish band around.

11/05/09 11:19am

To Jim and all those who agree that U2 is for old people, It is not very wise to go throwing stones when your own windows are made of glass. What so-called “bands” or groups do you listen to that would appeal to several generations and really bring in the money to E.L. in the summer? Would that be good enough for you? Maybe you still haven’t found what you’re looking for. Perhaps you need a lesson in history. Music history, that is.

11/05/09 3:33pm

Awwww that’s so cute. These students seem to think that EL and Lansing revolve around them. What’s a relevant band? Daughtry? They are currently turning out hits, and were here during the school year, and half the Breslin was EMPTY! (And no I don’t mean the half behind the stage.) I’m astounded at what morons some of the “kids” today are (and I use that term loosely because I’m not exactly old) and really fear for everyones future if they can’t even do some research (about things such as a “concert budget”) before they publish something.

No one who is anyone at this school has ever met that kid i guarantee it. I think campus west of division should get its own paper, so we don’t have to be represented by people like this who probably live at capitol villa

Being up at the top of the stadium in the dark is really kinda fun—and scary. My big question is: will there be beer in the Stadium? At the Rolling Stone concert long ago, there was only beer sold outside. It turned into a long, dry night.

Great question Kathy R. Concerts without a few frosty beers in a plastic cup are no bueno…
