Have you ever thought of changing your major because of the economic situation?

“Obviously, there aren’t very many jobs as a teacher available in Michigan. In the future it is definitely what I want to do. I have considered going into business, which is something I never want to do, and the economic situation would be the only reason I would change my major.”

Brittany Trudeau
secondary education sophomore

“I think my major is pretty sound. Basically, because of connections in Lansing, I have a good opportunity to get a job after college. There’s no real reason to be concerned. If you do what you love, I think you can do well at anything you can go into.”

Kristen Sheppard
comparative cultures and politics junior

“Yes, I have, but I did not go through with it. Mechanical engineering is a bigger percentage of the group, and I thought if I change to (a) smaller percent I would have a better chance of getting a job later on. I wanted to stick with it and I feel like it would be more rewarding at the end if I tried hard and would be a better person in the long run if I succeed in beating over a bunch of other people.”

“Yes, very, very much. I’ve changed my major seven times since. (I probably wouldn’t change it again) because communications is so broad, and I could get a job in many different career fields with that major.”

Christopher Van Nest
communication sophomore

“Yes, I just changed my major. I’m worried (because) of the economic situation. I heard in class that communication is not a real major and it’s hard to get jobs with that major. I was just a little worried so I added some specializations to my major — hopefully I would be wanted more in the career field I want to be in.”
