Beard, Loomis re-elected to City Council

By From staff reports (Last updated: 11/04/09 12:32am)

With all of East Lansing’s voting precincts reporting, East Lansing Mayor Vic Loomis and East Lansing City Councilmember Kevin Beard both have secured another term on the City Council.

Official vote numbers from all precincts have Loomis as the number one vote-getter, with 1,662, followed by Beard with 1,638. Challenger Hans Larsen received the third highest number of votes, with 685. About 351 voters selected a write-in candidate, indicating votes for challenger Phil Bellfy.

Loomis, who was at City Hall, 410 Abbot Road, when the preliminary results were released, said he hopes appreciates citizens’ votes of confidence.

“I want to thank citizens for their support over the past eight years,” he said.

Loomis declined to say whether he will seek another term as mayor.

“We’ll talk about that tomorrow,” he said. “I just want to savor what happened here tonight.”

Beard, who was at the Spartan Hall of Fame Cafe, 1601 W. Lake Lansing Road, said earlier in the night he was “supremely confident I’ll be re-elected” but still had butterflies about the night.

Congrats to the city of East Lansing! Congrats on supporting two candidates that are for wasting hundreds or millions of dollars of taxpayer money-public debt- to bail out struggling developers. Good luck E.Lansing with City Center II. Suckers

I believe that Hans and I did a tremendous job —getting a quarter of the voters to come out against the incumbents.

And even though we may have lost this election, we’ve won something of significance. We’ve shown that damn near a quarter of the voters trust us —and not the incumbents.

Look at us, two complete nobodies, who never sat on a commission, never ran for local office before, and yet people voted for us —not enough to win, obviously, but enough to convince me that we did the right thing and we stood up for the right principles, and people stood up right next to us. I’m absolutely thrilled by the results —it’ll keep me going for quite a while.

East Lansing,
you lost. An incredible opportunity to elect a strong servant.
A mere few hundred citizens needed to open their eyes and maybe spend a moment in indpendent thinking and then take a few minutes to vote.

A privilege that many gave their lives to bestow to generations to further strengthen and further reap the benefits from with some general maintenance, attuning, and care.

I’m so disappointed by all the ignorant voters and lazy students. These people are driving this city into the ground. East Lansing is becoming the new Chicago— in a bad way. Corruption and incompetence center of the municipal universe. Let’s just stand there and let Mr. Staton (HRH Pompous Ass) and Mr. Supremely Confident go ahead and drive this city into the ground. Can’t wait to see where our property values go in the next few years…. I never truly thought until now that any piece of me would really be going to hell. Guess I’ll be seeing my real estate down there. I wouldn’t buy property in East Lansing either.

Wow, they’ve done such a stellar job so far. Sure glad I don’t live in EL anymore. Unfortunately, I feel sorry for all the students who have to put up with this ridiculous city government.

Spirit of East Lansing,

Most of the students do not have official residence in East Lansing. The ones that took the time to change their residence probably took the time to vote. Look at the numbers though, how many familes live in East Lansing? And a couple hundred voted? Do not blame any “lazy students”. I am sick of hearing about the students being the problem. If it was not for them there would be no East Lansing and everyone needs to wake up and realize it.
