By Matt Bishop (Last updated: 11/24/09 8:08pm)

The Big Ten topped all conferences for the fifth straight season as eight players were named Academic All-America, the league announced Tuesday.

The eight Big Ten selections were three more than the closest conference.

Penn State’s Josh Hull and Andrew Pitz both earned first-team honors for the second straight year. Joining them on the first team were MSU’s Blair White, Michigan’s Zoltan Mesko, Northwestern’s Zeke Markshausen and Penn State’s Stefen Wisniewski. Northwestern’s Stefan Demons and Purdue’s Ryan Kerrigan were named to the second team.

The Big Ten had six first-team players, the other Football Bowl Subdivision conferences totaled nine.
