Hockey team enjoys weekend laurels

By Alex DiFilippo (Last updated: 11/16/09 7:42pm)

After sweeping Michigan last weekend, the MSU hockey team jumped seven spots in the USCHO rankings, currently sitting at No. 6 in the national polls released Monday.

MSU also received one first place vote in the polls.

No. 16 U-M fell 10 spots and has lost four straight games, three of which were held at Yost Ice Arena.

Sophomore goaltender Drew Palmisano also was named the Goaltender of the Week by the CCHA on Monday. Palmisano stopped 48 of the 50 shots he faced this weekend, and recorded his second career shutout in Saturday’s 2-0 victory against the Wolverines.

Through 12 games this season, the Spartans (9-2-1 overall, 6-1-1 CCHA) are one win away from matching their win total from all of last year.

The Spartans are atop the CCHA standings, with second place Miami (Ohio) two points back and third place Ohio State five points behind.

MSU will host No. 14 Notre Dame at 7:05 p.m. Thursday then travel to Fort Wayne, Ind., on Sunday for an afternoon game against the Fighting Irish, starting at 4:05 p.m.

Nope, not South Bend. They decided to have this game at a neutral location for whatever strange reason.
