The Boilermakers (4-6, 3-3) defeated U-M 38-36 after stopping a U-M two-point conversion attempt with just more than two minutes left. Purdue quarterback Joey Elliott went 28-for-39 passing for 367 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Purdue was down 24-10 at halftime, but after trading touchdowns, the Boilermakers scored on a six-yard run and recovered an onside kick. On the next play, Elliott threw a 54-yard bomb to give Purdue a 31-30 lead it would not give up. U-M head coach Rich Rodriguez has won just three Big Ten games since coming to Ann Arbor last season.
Northwestern 17, Iowa 10 — The Hawkeyes’ quest for an undefeated season is over. Northwestern defeated Iowa 17-10 to fall to 9-1 overall and 5-1 in the Big Ten. Iowa quarterback Ricky Stanzi left the game in the second quarter after being sacked in the end zone and fumbling for a Northwestern touchdown. Stanzi was 4-for-9 passing for 134 yards and one interception before leaving the game. His backup, James Vandenberg, went 9-for-27 passing for 82 yards and one interception. Northwestern (6-4, 3-3) became the first team this season to hold a fourth quarter lead against Iowa. Iowa had been 4-0 when trailing entering the fourth quarter this season. Iowa, whose 13-game winning streak was snapped, travels to Columbus, Ohio, next week with first place in the Big Ten on the line.
Ohio State 24, Penn State 7 — Terrelle Pryor embarrassed Penn State by choosing to attend Ohio State instead of his home-state school. Saturday, he embarrassed the Nittany Lions on the field as Ohio State (8-2, 5-1) defeated Penn State 24-7 to move back into a first-place tie in the Big Ten. Pryor went 8-for-17 passing for 125 yards and two touchdowns with a rushing touchdown, but it was the Buckeyes’ defense that won the game. Penn State (8-2, 4-2) was held to just 201 yards of offense and senior quarterback Daryll Clark went 12-for-28 passing with one interception. Late in the third quarter, Pryor found receiver DeVier Posey down the sideline for a 62-yard touchdown pass to put the Buckeyes up 10 and all but seal the fate of the Nittany Lions, who suffered their second home loss of the season.
Illinois 35, Minnesota 32 — Illinois has found life. Two weeks ago it was 1-6 and reeling. But after Saturday’s 35-32 victory against Minnesota, the Illini are now 3-6 and still have a slim chance at a bowl game. Illinois had a 28-7 halftime lead, despite losing senior quarterback Juice Williams to injury in the first quarter.
Williams was 5-for-5 for 53 yards and one touchdown before leaving the game. Backup Jacob Charest replaced Williams and went 10-for-19 for 185 yards and one touchdown. The Illini almost blew the lead, as Minnesota (5-5, 3-4) cut the lead to three twice during the fourth quarter, but Illinois held on.
Wisconsin 31, Indiana 28 — Indiana’s bad luck continued this week, as the team lost 31-28 to Wisconsin. Badger running back John Clay ran for 134 yards in the first half and missed the entire second half. His backup, Montee Ball, also ran for more than 100 yards. The Badgers ran for 294 yards as a team. Wisconsin (7-2, 4-2) built a 17-7 first half lead. But every time the Hoosiers cut the lead to three, the Badgers answered. Indiana fell to 4-6 overall and 1-5 in the Big Ten.
